About the Artist
Born in Lafayette and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Leonardo Madriz is an interdisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn, NY. Working across methods of filmmaking, painting, sculpture, installation, and creative writing, he makes material assemblages and expanded cinema in which short films are projected onto minimalist structures of domestic architecture. Presenting personal narrative framed by external forces, his work speaks to notions of place as home, migration and assimilation, relationality, disillusionments of the American Dream, and the inner states of belonging.
Madriz received his MFA from Hunter College in 2021 and his BFA from Louisiana State University in 2010. He is represented by Hauser and Wirth and has taught at the International Center for Photography and The School of Visual Arts. His residencies and fellowships include the Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program, Brooklyn, NY; Wassaic Project; Bemis Center; Proyecto en Sitio, Umecuaro , MX; Goldberg Foundation Scholarship, Curatorial Workshop with Koyo Kouoh, 2019, Vermont Studio Center Grant and Residency; New York Studio School Painting Scholarship.
