COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents gathered at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center on Tuesday to voice concerns over steep increases in Delta Utilities bills; company representatives explained that the new bill format breaks out old fees and promised to launch DU Cares with United Way for payment assistance.  The Advocate
  • Baton Rouge residents can nominate their favorite local businesses and venues for the Best of 225 Awards through Jan. 31 & voting begins Feb. 25 until April 8. Nominations will shape next year's ballot featuring top restaurants, entertainment spots and more.  225 Magazine
  • WAFB morning anchor Liz Koh announced she will leave Baton Rouge at the end-of-month to care for her aging parents back East. She thanked her co-anchors and local viewers for their support during her nearly decade-long service.  The Advocate

  • Perkins Rowe announced that Barrio Burrito Bar will join its tenant mix in a 1,580 sqft space next to Barnes & Noble. The quick-service Tex-Mex restaurant will serve as Louisiana's flagship and open in the second quarter of 2026.  WAFB 9
  • Blue Store Chicken will open its new Geismar restaurant tomorrow at 10 a.m. at its renovated former McDonald's building (13496 Highway 73 near the Big Boss On Your Way Mobil station) as part of the chain's local expansion.  WAFB 9

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Dr. Stephen Barnes said that Louisiana’s economy is trending upward after the pandemic - job growth still lags behind national trends because tourism and oil suffered setbacks. He expects increased public investment and rising incomes to help drive progress in 2026.  The Advocate

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Ivor van Heerden, the scientist who warned New Orleans about a storm like Katrina by running surge models and urging coastal restoration before the 2005 disaster, later alerted officials when levees broke — shaping emergency responses and future preparedness.  LSU Reveille

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City-parish workers posted warnings at 5 East, 550 Lee Drive saying water will be cut Jan. 27 if the unpaid sewer bill remains unsettled for 6 months, and residents are advised to contact their property manager (the landlord is responsible for the bill).  The Advocate

HEALTH NEWS

  • Baton Rouge physician Dr. Tatiana Saavedra explained that menopause is a natural part of aging that affects the heart, bones, and brain, and she recommended starting hormone replacement therapy in the perimenopause phase (about 10 years before menopause) to help reduce long-term risks. She also advised adopting balanced lifestyle changes like a healthy diet and regular exercise.  WVLA

  • LSU wide receiver Nic Anderson entered the transfer portal on Wednesday, Jan. 14, according to his agency (Team IFA) as reported by CBS Sports. He joined LSU after playing at Oklahoma and recorded 12 touchdown catches with 904 receiving yards.  WBRZ
  • The Louisiana Marathon returns this weekend in Baton Rouge with up to 9,000 runners (from all 50 states and 15 countries) participating and is expected to generate an estimated $5 million boost for local hotels and restaurants.  WJBO
  • LSU linebacker Harold Perkins bid farewell to Baton Rouge on Wednesday as he declared for the NFL Draft and thanked his coaches & teammates on social media, citing his multiple honors at LSU.  WBRZ
  • LSU signed USC transfer quarterback Husan Longstreet on Wednesday, Jan. 14. The five-star prospect joins Lane Kiffin's growing QB room & adds fresh talent after strong play at USC.  WBRZ
