  • The Inspiration Center, now open at Howell Park after years of planning, offers free youth programs (after-school mentoring, digital learning, and an indoor basketball court) and family resources to create a safe space for North Baton Rouge residents.  WVLA
  • Dreams Come True of Louisiana is hosting its annual golf tournament on March 9 at Country Club of Louisiana. Only two spots remain for a day that offers an open bar, food, a practice range, and prizes while raising funds to grant wishes for severely ill children (ages 3-18).  WVLA
  • The King Cake Drive-Thru returns Saturday, Jan. 31 at Rally Cap Brewing (10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.), letting Baton Rouge taste famous New Orleans king cakes from local bakeries. Organized by Mike and Tiffany Graves, the event supports small family-run businesses and celebrates Mardi Gras traditions.  WBRZ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • DEMCO reached a milestone by serving 120,000 electric meters that power over half a million people in East Baton Rouge and six other parishes. The cooperative, founded in 1938, has upgraded its system with new technology to meet growing demand.  The Advocate

CULTURE NEWS

  • Baton Rouge rapper NBA YoungBoy said in an interview on Tuesday that he would perform at home only if he could show at LSU stadium (his hometown venue). His comment comes after sell-out shows in New Orleans and follows the release of his latest album, Slime Cry.  WBRZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Former Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne will host a free lecture series on Louisiana history at the Old Governor’s Mansion at 5:30 p.m. Thursday—his talks will cover local legends including Fats Domino, Jimmy Swaggart, John Fred and his Playboy Band, and Mahalia Jackson.  WBRZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission has proposed changes to commercial menhaden fishing zones along the coast, and comments are accepted by LDWF until 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23 (residents can send feedback by mail or email).  WBRZ
  • Louisiana tourism has launched the Year of Outdoors to promote parks and outdoor activities. Lt. Gov. Nungesser announced the initiative during the Walter B. Jacobs Nature Center’s grand reopening on Jan. 17 in Caddo Parish, inviting everyone to explore the state’s natural beauty.  The Advocate

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • State and local officials broke ground for a new mixed-use development on Harding Boulevard in North Baton Rouge Monday. The project will include a grocery store, retail shops, medical offices, small businesses and a DMV office — it is expected to finish by mid next year.  WJBO

  • LSU head football coach Lane Kiffin spoke Tuesday at the Leadership Power Breakfast hosted by the Greater Baton Rouge Business Report. He outlined his new role and vision for LSU football to local audiences.  WAFB 9
  • Zachary High track teams started their indoor season at Carl Maddox Fieldhouse on Jan. 10, setting records during the LSU High School Indoor classic. Coach Julie Fink earned a lifetime achievement award from the Louisiana Track and Field Coaches Association for her 20+ years in the sport.  The Advocate
  • Last Friday, two high school basketball contests in Baton Rouge saw Doyle defeat Holden in both the girls game (58-53) and the boys contest where the Tigers scored over 100 points with 14 3-pointers; coach Kennedy credited forced turnovers and rebounds as the keys to the win.  The Advocate
  • Baton Rouge native Brenna Huckaby is set to compete in the Winter Paralympics in Milan this March with renewed focus on training as a mom of two. Her family will cheer as she uses a unique ritual (lucky socks) to aim for more medals.  225 Magazine
