COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A local pastor and his congregation invested $1.2M in an abandoned North Baton Rouge property to transform it into a multi-use development (plans are underway to add new community spaces).  WAFB 9
  • Capital Area United Way celebrated the rededication of its historic building just off Laurel Street after nearly 18 months of renovations to restore Art Deco design and add community meeting space, part of its 100th anniversary celebrations on Wednesday.  WBRZ
  • The Spanish Town Mardi Gras Parade is scheduled for Feb. 14 and promises an upbeat celebration with festive displays and community spirit in Spanish Town. Locals can look forward to a vibrant parade that highlights cultural flair.  WAFB 9

BUSINESS NEWS

  • West Baton Rouge leaders and business executives gathered at the chamber luncheon on Tuesday to discuss the parish’s growth including property tax cuts, nearly $40 million in grants & the Hwy 415 connector construction set to begin before the end of 2026, which will ease traffic countywide.  WAFB 9
  • Kiro Seafood Buffet has moved its soft opening to Friday at Siegen Lane Marketplace + it will offer locals a chance to enjoy all-you-can-eat seafood.  WAFB 9

CULTURE NEWS

  • Zachary's Restaurant Week returns this week until Jan. 24, offering a prix-fixe menu from over ten local restaurants. The event gives food lovers a chance to try dishes like tacos, BBQ and peach cobbler in Zachary.  WBRZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • LSU is hosting the 2026 Global Game Jam from Jan. 30 to Feb. 1 at the LSU Digital Media Center, inviting creators from all backgrounds to join a 48-hour sprint of game design.  WVLA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • State leaders are ramping up coastal restoration efforts as the CPRA updates its annual plan—public feedback is accepted via email and the website until February 17 for inclusion in the final version. The CPRA board also noted increased usage at the Bayou Pigeon boat launch into the Atchafalaya Basin.  WVLA
  • LSU Lakes Restoration Project dredged a strip along the western shoreline of University Lake near sorority row on Jan. 13. The final phase, started last fall to deepen the lakes, is set to finish by year end, though road work may extend into next year.  LSU Reveille

  • Baker public works crews are repairing a water line along Sherron Avenue and Lavey Lane today. The work may cause temporary delays and detours for local traffic.  WBRZ

  • LSU defensive back Javien Toviano sued the LSU Board of Supervisors over his Title IX suspension, alleging constitutional rights violations & that the panel’s Oct. 20 decision hurt his football career after he joined the transfer portal in East Baton Rouge Parish.  WBRZ
