  • Denham Springs' newest play center, The Play District, opened last week at 31568 LA-16 N, offering seven playhouses inspired by local sponsors for imaginative play. The family-owned center hosts daily sessions and plans seasonal events while local schools book field trips.  225 Magazine
  • Rebecca Perloff was named president of the NAACP Baton Rouge branch in a press release this week. She aims to strengthen the organization and support its members + draws on her Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus experience.  The Advocate

  • Family business leaders in south Louisiana say clear roles + open communication help manage multi-generation challenges. They stress succession planning and regular family meals to keep operations running smoothly.  The Advocate
  • Business Report is accepting nominations for its 2026 Influential Women in Business recognition (an award honoring professional women from the Capital Region’s business, government and nonprofit sectors).   • St. George business leaders launched a new Chamber of Commerce to support local companies with training, networking & resources, following an initial November meeting that drew about 35 entrepreneurs.   • Viola Davis will film her new movie in Baton Rouge between April and June; the Oscar-winning actress stars in the Amazon MGM Studios thriller Ally Clark (set in Alaska, Washington D.C. and Louisiana) under director Phillip Noyce.  WBRZ

  • East Baton Rouge Parish School District will shift to remote learning on Monday as a winter weather precaution & families are advised to check school communications for instructions.  WBRZ
  • University Laboratory School was certified as a National Arbor Foundation Tree Campus after U-High students harvested 13 trees on Friday, Jan. 23. Led by IB student Vaughn Meiners and Baton Rouge Green in partnership with LSU Lakes Project, 16 cypress trees were planted near LSU’s Alumni Center — reinforcing sustainability.  WBRZ

  • Baton Rouge fire officials urge residents to install smoke alarms after 10 Louisiana fire deaths & say they will clear a backlog of installation requests within 72 hours.  WAFB 9

  • With freezing temperatures set to hit this weekend, local experts advise residents to service generators and fill gas tanks before the cold snap begins. A technician from New Roads and a Baton Rouge repair specialist remind users to place both portable and standby generators outdoors (to prevent carbon monoxide buildup).  WBRZ
  • Mamas Who Pray Doula Care Services hosted a Black Maternal Health Roundtable on Friday in Baton Rouge to honor Maternal Health Awareness Day and late midwife Dr. Janelle Green-Smith; Black mothers + birth professionals joined policymakers to discuss solutions for reducing maternal health disparities.  WBRZ

  • LSU gymnastics posted its highest season score in a Baton Rouge home opener win over Kentucky with a final score of 198.05-195.73. The team (holding a 3-1-1 record) will travel to Missouri next week.  WBRZ
  • Jordan Seaton, the top offensive tackle recruit in the transfer portal, committed to LSU friday night, choosing the Tigers over Oregon and Miami. His move gives LSU three number one rankings in the portal based on On3's report.  WBRZ
  • LSU's men's basketball game against Arkansas has been rescheduled to tip off at 4 p.m. due to a winter storm — originally set for 7:30 p.m. at Bud Walton Arena and to be broadcast on the SEC Network.  WBRZ
