  • Home insurance rates dropped on Dec. 20 when Allied Trust lowered premiums 2.3% for newer homes and further cuts are expected once a new reinsurance treaty is finalized. Officials say increased reinsurer profits could ease cost pressures for policyholders.  The Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • East Baton Rouge officials prepared for a winter storm watch by staging salt, barricades, and shelter openings after a Friday briefing by Mayor-President Sid Edwards; the watch took effect at midnight today and officials said they will continue to deploy resources as temperatures drop (for example, a shelter at 1623 Convention Street opened Saturday at 1 p.m.).  WAFB 9

HEALTH NEWS

  • Fire safety officials advise Baton Rouge residents to ensure their carbon monoxide detectors and fire extinguishers are working before winter weather intensifies. They encourage homeowners to install or replace these vital devices to protect their homes.  WAFB 9
  • LSU scientist Alexandra Noël explained that new BMJ research shows vaping harms lung proteins vital to immune defense + her lab will study how new vaporizers and e-liquids affect health, warning of risks from secondhand aerosol.  LSU Reveille
