COMMUNITY NEWS

  • High school students held a pet food drive Sunday at University Laboratory School at LSU to collect food for dogs and cats, benefiting Companion Animal Alliance. Volunteers will transport the donations Tuesday for local distribution.  WBRZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Scotlandville honors its rich Black legacy and community pride with roots dating back to the 1800s. The city recently broke ground on a $50 million grocery store project along Harding Boulevard (a key development) to help restore local strength.  WBRZ
  • Baton Rouge locals can enjoy Carnival events this month with parades from Feb. 6, live concerts, art shows (at the LSU Museum of Art) and theater festivals. Mardi Gras is set for Feb. 17 and celebrations continue through Feb. 28.  225 Magazine
  • Attendees gathered at the Old Governor's Mansion on Sunday for the free For the Love of the Mansion event, which featured a ballroom dancing class, a cello recital, and an exclusive look into the museum's archives.  WBRZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • LSU (a local hub for cyber research) and ARCYBER signed an agreement to boost cybersecurity education, research, and technology transfer on campus, celebrated by officials on Jan. 29. The deal builds on LSU’s Center of Academic Excellence status to create new opportunities for students.  LSU Reveille

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Steven Kelley of Baton Rouge Cardiology Center shared heart health tips on WBRZ today for Heart Health Month. He urged 30 minutes of aerobic exercise 3 to 5 days a week and healthy eating to lower high blood pressure and diabetes risks and promoted screenings (Jump Start Your Heart).  WBRZ

  • LSU Women’s Basketball beat No. 24 Alabama 103-63 in a cool Sunday morning game at the PMAC in Baton Rouge, with Jada Richard scoring 16 points and forcing 11 turnovers from the Tide + the Tigers will travel to Austin to face No. 4 Texas Lady Longhorns in a rematch.  LSU Reveille
  • At LSU's meet on Friday, Jan. 23, gymnasts explained how music (from calming beats to inspirational tunes) shapes their routines. Sophomore Lexi Zeiss and senior Kathryn Weilbacher used personal songs to steady nerves and add style to their performances.  LSU Reveille
  • Southern University revealed its 2026 football schedule, with the season starting Aug. 29 in Birmingham against Alabama State (times for games are TBD) and a homecoming game set for Oct. 3 at its home venue, followed by several home and away matchups.  WAFB 9
  • LSU softball sophomore pitcher Jayden Heavener (00) is expected to fill the key role left by Sydney Berzon’s transfer as the team gears up to open its season at home on Thursday, with head coach Beth Torina yet to confirm the final lineup.  LSU Reveille
  • ESPN's College GameDay will visit Baton Rouge on Feb. 14 to cover the women’s basketball game between third-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks and sixth-ranked LSU Tigers. The broadcast will air on ABC + WBRZ from the Pete Marvich Center starting at 7 p.m. with tip-off at 7:40 p.m.  WBRZ
  • LSU coach McMahon said bench players are stepping up after injuries — Rashad King scored a season-high 18 points Saturday in Columbia while Robert Miller III and PJ Carter boosted the team’s energy on the court. The Tigers adjusted their rotation to improve play.  LSU Reveille
