- ➤ The Baton Rouge Epicurean Society donated over $120K to seven local charities, including a $45K gift to the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank and $20K to a culinary medicine program at OLOL Children’s Hospital, to support children’s health (by improving nutrition). WAFB 9
- ➤ LSU accounting sophomore Larry Smith offered free haircuts Monday, Feb. 2 at Free Speech Alley in front of the Student Union in partnership with Culture Lens Collective (an LSU group supporting Black students) to help peers save money and connect. LSU Reveille

- ➤ On Monday evening, Delta Utilities met with community members to address rising natural gas bills that spiked after the switch from Entergy; the firm also launched a customer assistance program offering up to $250 (in bill help) available by phone or at select offices. WBRZ
- ➤ Main Street Market celebrated its grand reopening yesterday and will host week-long events featuring new vendors downtown until Feb. 7. WAFB 9
- ➤ Empire Wingz began as a wing addition at a nightclub aimed at boosting drink sales — it later launched a mobile operation that led to a permanent spot across from Southern University. The popular local brand now has six locations, employs students, and plans to expand further. WBRZ

- ➤ Post Malone and Jelly Roll will perform at Tiger Stadium on May 23 for LSU Athletics’ Death Valley Live Stadium Series, with ticket presale starting Feb. 6 at 10 a.m. (fans must sign up by 11 p.m. Wednesday) and general admission beginning Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. WBRZ
- ➤ The Krewe of Oshun parade took place Saturday in Scotlandville — the route went from Howell Boulevard, through 72nd Avenue and Scenic Highway, to Harding Boulevard near Southern University — and despite chilly weather and a lower turnout than last year, community bands and members celebrated Black culture during Mardi Gras. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ LSU evacuated its Digital Media Center on Monday, Feb. 2 after reports of elevated CO2 levels. LSU Facility Services + EHS cleared the building and investigated the cause, and re-entry will be allowed only after safety is confirmed. WBRZ
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Students from several local schools (including Park Forest and Jefferson Terrace) launched GPS trackers into the Mississippi River at the LSU Center for River Studies on Monday, Feb. 2, capturing live data on litter movement and learning how geospatial data aids environmental study. WBRZ
- ➤ On Jan. 8, Clean Harbors workers had a spill during a tank demolition at a hazardous waste complex near Devil's Swamp Lake, releasing about 3,200 gallons of wastewater with low-level heavy metals. The area was secured, samples were taken for analysis, and state inspectors will visit the site soon. The Advocate

- ➤ New research from Ohio State University's Wexner Medical Center shows cardiovascular disease is affecting people in their 20s and 30s because of high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol.
