CULTURE NEWS

  • Baton Rouge artist Ashli Ognelodh Curry presents 'The Great Reunion,' a multi-city exhibition exploring the Great Migration and the enduring strength of Black families. The show is on view at the Shell Gallery (Cary Saurage Community Arts Center) until Feb. 21.  WVLA
  • Southern University is repairing the Archives Building (the Little White House) as part of preservation efforts in its Historic District. The 1840 Kernan Plantation House, once a president’s home, dormitory, and infirmary, now stands as a landmark celebrating the university’s legacy.  WBRZ
  • The Krewe of Orion Mardi Gras parade is set to roll on February 7 in Baton Rouge, and Darren Coates and Charles Harvey preview what to expect (details from parade organizers).  WAFB 9
  • The 31st annual Krewe of Diversion Mardi Gras Boat Parade sails from Manny's in Maurepas Saturday at noon with Grand Marshal Troy Landry leading, benefiting St. Jude Children's Research Hospital + registration opens Friday at 6 p.m. for a $50 boat fee and a live auction at 5:30 p.m.  WBRZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • LSU is set to reopen its newly renovated School of Music Recital Hall in September with updated acoustics + improved seating and tech that will benefit recitals, guest performances and lectures as the facility will be renamed John G. Turner and Jerry G. Fischer Recital Hall.  The Advocate
  • Inside John B. Cade Library at Southern University, the Archive Department preserves thousands of historical photos and documents and partners with Getty Images to digitally restore these collections for public access. Head archivist Angela Proctor said the effort includes slave narratives to help future generations learn from local history (protecting heritage from climate damage).  WBRZ
  • Residents can become permitted wildlife rehabilitators by taking a four-part online course from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (covering rules, rehab standards, process, and vet medicine) and then passing an exam with an 80% score minimum. It is one of three approved online training options for wildlife rehabilitation.  The Advocate
  • Sierra Johnson, a Zachary student studying radiologic sciences, was named to the president’s honor roll at Midwestern State University for Fall 2025 — the honor roll recognizes students who complete 12 credit hours with all A grades.  The Advocate

  • The Baton Rouge Fire Department is recruiting entry-level firefighters to expand its team. Applicants must first apply for the firefighter exam on the Office of State Examiner website.  WAFB 9

  • Baton Rouge venues offer diverse Valentine’s Day specials including dine-in deals, prix-fixe meals, painting classes, and a themed rooftop pop-up bar. Options range from JINYA Ramen Bar’s Tuesday special to BRQ Seafood and Barbeque’s Feb. 14 menu—reservations are recommended.  225 Magazine

  • LSU football coach Lane Kiffin credited Baton Rouge fans for attracting a strong transfer portal class and top high school recruits whose talent includes quarterback Sam Leavitt (expected to succeed Garrett Nussmeier) after his Dec. 1 appointment, setting a promising foundation for his new vision at LSU.  WBRZ
  • Grambling quarterback C'zavian Teasett, a Baton Rouge native, requested community financial support during his inpatient rehab after a spinal injury sustained at the Las Vegas HBCU Classic in October 2025 (he said he is making daily progress).  WBRZ
