COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Southern University plans to open the JagFresh Farmers Market this spring + it will run on campus every first and third Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with 60 vendors selling items like goat soap, honey, and eggs as part of a USDA pilot program.  WBRZ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Truce & Chaos, a cocktail bar by the owner of Olive or Twist, will soon open in the former Uncle Earl’s space on Perkins Road after the beloved bar closed on Jan. 15. The venue is expected to bring a fresh take to the local bar scene.  The Advocate
  • American Safety acquired Baton Rouge-based Dixieland Tours this week — adding 21 charter buses to its fleet of over 400 vehicles — to boost its tourism transportation in the region. Dixieland Tours will continue operating under its own name with current leadership.  The Advocate

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Krewe of Artemis parade will mark its 25th roll as it comes to Baton Rouge soon. Joanne Harvey and Leigh Davis explained the event honors a long-standing tradition and festive spirit in the city.  WAFB 9
  • LSU received a $220,871 grant to help preserve two 11-thousand-year-old Native American mounds (near Tiger Stadium) from the National Park Service’s Save America’s Treasures program. The project will protect a vital piece of our cultural heritage for future generations.  LSU Reveille

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The East Baton Rouge Parish School Board gave preliminary approval to install RhinoWare door barricades at five high schools + district officials plan final approval on Feb. 19 as funding from local and federal sources covers a $460,000 safety upgrade.  The Advocate
  • Applications opened Friday for a women-only fishing workshop hosted by LDWF + LWF Foundation offering 15 spots for women 18 and up to learn fishing skills at Waddill Wildlife Refuge on April 11. Applicants will be emailed after applications close March 1, and selected attendees must buy a fishing license.  WBRZ
  • Southern University in Baton Rouge received a $2M grant to boost its data system, helping staff catch at-risk students early. Officials aim to raise the 4-year (12%) and 6-year (32%) graduation rates by 2027 using expanded academic advising and in-person support.  The Advocate

  • Leaders for a Better Louisiana and LPB will broadcast a debate with U.S. Senate candidates on April 16 at 7 p.m. on public television statewide (debate criteria will be released later).  WVLA
  • The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has been awarded a lease for a new 100,000 sqft community-based outpatient clinic in Baton Rouge that will consolidate care from existing clinics and open in 2029.  WBRZ

SPORTS NEWS

  • LSU club hockey engaged with students at Free Speech Alley on Feb. 3 to promote jersey sales and strengthen community ties — head coach John Martino plans to boost support as the team faces Rice today at Planet Ice in Lafayette and Tulane tomorrow.  LSU Reveille
  • Former Saints quarterback Drew Brees was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on his first ballot on Thursday after a 20-season career with the Chargers + Saints, including a 2009 Super Bowl win.  WJBO
  • The fifth-ranked LSU women lost to fourth-ranked Texas 77-64 in an SEC game in Austin, leaving them with a 21-3 record. They will visit Auburn Sunday afternoon.  WJBO
