COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Capital Area United Way will host its Super Tax Day event at the Main Library at Goodwood on Saturday, Feb. 28 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. IRS-certified volunteers will offer free tax help for local residents with low to moderate incomes.  WAFB 9
  • On Sunday, Feb. 22, the Mystic Krewe of Mutts parade will march along St. Ferdinand Street with dance groups, music, and adoptable dogs while vendors open the Bark in the Park fair at Galvez Plaza at 10 a.m.; the event supports Capital Area Animal Welfare Society’s spay & neuter program.  225 Magazine

CULTURE NEWS

  • At the Comogo Floats warehouse in Plaquemine, Earl Comeaux and his family build Mardi Gras parade floats for about 30 parades from October through March - they began in 2014 when his sister imagined a nighttime celebration.  WBRZ
  • Two Baton Rouge school dance teams made their parade debuts Monday night at the Krewe of Shenandoah parade; Woodlawn Middle School's Panther Pearls danced near their school (after coach Monique Commodore Ray returned from surgery) and showcased an old-school style.  WBRZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ascension Public Schools announced that online pre-K applications for the 2026-27 school year will open on March 1. The portal will accept registrations for public seats or 50 tuition-based seats (age requirements by Sept. 30 apply).  The Advocate
  • Chef Celeste Gill teaches inmates at the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison culinary and management skills with a two-part program combining classroom lessons (food safety, budgeting, and management certification) and hands-on training. The program, started in 2013 and now expanded, helps inmates gain skills for employment in the restaurant industry.  The Advocate
  • Two new public schools in the St. George area are planned— the elementary school is set for August 2027 and the high school nears design— amid rising costs and pending a May 16 referendum. The parish school board will vote at 5 p.m. Thursday on increasing the elementary project's budget.  The Advocate
  • St. John Primary and St. Theresa Middle schools honored their Teacher and Support Staff of the Year winners today by naming Ashley Guidry and Lisa Badame at St. John and Mallory Lanclos and Brandi Mancuso at St. Theresa for their lasting impact on students.  The Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State highway officials announced that the new interchange between I-10 and Pecue Lane (a diverging diamond interchange) will open today in the southeastern part of East Baton Rouge Parish to improve traffic flow and reduce backups at Siegen Lane and Highland Road.  WBRZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • At the Jackson site, Layne Langley from the LSU Ag Center instructed East Feliciana Council on Aging members on seated exercises for seniors with chronic conditions and disabilities; the session highlighted immediate benefits like improved sleep and reduced blood pressure + long-term perks for heart and brain health.  The Advocate
