COMMUNITY NEWS

  • More than 150 vehicles gathered Saturday at River Parishes Community College for (Cruisin’ the Day for United Way) to raise funds for community services including health, education, and basic needs. Nova Chem and RPCC organized the event with car shows, craft booths and food vendors.  The Advocate
  • A garden party celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Margie Y. Jenkins Azalea Garden at LSU AgCenter Hammond on March 12 from 4 to 6 p.m. at 21549 Old Covington Highway; the free event offers refreshments, garden tours, and a raffle (proceeds support the garden).  The Advocate
  • The Capital Area Animal Welfare Society hosted a Hairy Pawter-themed pet parade in downtown on Feb. 22 (the event also served as a fundraiser) where pets and their owners enjoyed beads, treats, and post-parade festivities.  225 Magazine
  • OLOL Children’s Hospital will benefit from the Driving the Future campaign’s 16th-year raffle, offering $50 tickets for a chance to win one of five new 2026 Lexus vehicles; the campaign has raised over $16 million in the past 15 years.  WAFB 9

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Business Report’s 2026 Best Places to Work program is now open for registration, and companies with at least 15 employees in the Capital Region can apply free until April 24. Eligible businesses include public, private, nonprofit and government organizations (with a physical presence and at least one year in operation).  225 Magazine

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Thursday, special needs friends Amy Spence and Brittney Harvey work on pottery at Brushfire Studio in Denham Springs. They use art to express themselves and stay active (a key part of their structured weekly schedule).  The Advocate

EDUCATION NEWS

  • East Baton Rouge Parish Schools and Southern University's School of Nursing and Allied Health have partnered to improve speech support for English language learners using the JAG Mobile at Southeast Middle School — student clinicians perform assessments and will visit more sites through the semester.  WAFB 9
  • Southeastern Louisiana University announced a new academic alignment that will take effect fall, creating a College of Nursing, reconfiguring the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences, and adding health systems administration and sports management to its College of Business.  The Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials in Ascension and Tangipahoa parishes have enacted burn bans effective immediately to combat wildfire risks — Ascension's ban lasts until March 24 while nearby Mississippi counties in Amite and Wilkinson remain restricted until March 23.  WBRZ
  • State Rep. Tony Bacala is proposing HB 285 to let school boards partner with credit unions for financial literacy courses after a branch was blocked at East Ascension High School — the bill, referred to the Education Committee, could advance when session begins March 9.  WBRZ
  • Officials held an open house Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Glen Oaks High School to gather input on the $25 million Mickens Road project, which will change a two-lane road into a three-lane roadway with a shared-use path in North Baton Rouge (including a roundabout at Lanier Drive).  WBRZ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Dutchtown High freshman Lilly Johnson capped her undefeated 43-0 wrestling season with a win over Carmen Mueller in the 114-pound (class) match at the state championships in Bossier City and credited her mom and coaches for their support.  The Advocate
  • Zachary High’s girls earned a 26 — 3 record with an undefeated district run to open regional play at home on Feb. 23, and the boys, finishing 29 — 4, are expected to be top seeds with a bye while the track teams finished indoor season at LSU on Feb. 21.  The Advocate
  • Baton Rouge tennis captain Wilbert Doc Whitfield was awarded the USTA National Captain of the Year on Tuesday, Feb. 24, becoming the first ever recipient after 14 years leading 87 teams and earning Southern Captain of the Year.  WBRZ
