COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Representatives from the Downtown Development District and Atchafalaya National Heritage Area unveiled the educational signs yesterday at City Dock — along the Riverfront Plaza, Water Campus and Skip Bertman Drive Levee Trailhead — to explain the Mississippi River’s hydrology, levee system and early Native American settlements.  WAFB 9

  • Fuego Tortilla Grill opened its newest location at 805 West Lee Dr. on March 3 — a 24-hour Tex-Mex spot offering affordable tacos and unique menu items. It targets both students and families near LSU.  225 Magazine

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jada Butler from Donaldsonville was elected to the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi at LSU Shreveport, a reserved honor for top academic achievers (including seniors, juniors, graduate students, and faculty).  The Advocate
  • Livingston Parish Public Schools began accepting online kindergarten registrations for the 2026-27 school year on March 2. Parents must provide required documents for children turning 5 by Sept. 30 while current LPPS Pre-K students are automatically enrolled.  WBRZ
  • A federal judge ruled on Friday that St. James Parish schools continue to show segregation, as one school remains over 95+% Black and the board's request to dismiss the case was denied.  WBRZ
  • Southeastern Louisiana University reported historic spring enrollment growth as student numbers surpassed 15,000 with a 4.3% rise that included more dual enrollment students (a key factor in local workforce planning). University leaders say this success will boost the region's economic strength.  The Advocate
  • Zachary student Anna Beauchamp was named to the president's list at James Madison University in fall 2025 when she earned at least 12 graded credit hours + a 3.900 GPA as a nursing major.  The Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Jeff Landry and LED Secretary Susan Bourgeois announced a state investment—one designed to redefine Louisiana's bid for major economic projects—at the Governor’s Press Room in the State Capitol on Tuesday, Mar. 3; legislative leaders joined, and the event was streamed on Facebook and YouTube.  WBRZ

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Construction is underway on a new three-story condo building with eight units along Lakeland Drive near Capitol Lakes in Spanish Town. Local residents said the project will boost neighborhood character and walkability as the first phase takes shape.  WAFB 9

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Feb. 23, the Zachary High girls basketball team won 72-25 in the regional round to advance to Marsh Madness at Southeastern Louisiana University. They will face 4 seed Neville on March 5 at 6:15 p.m. for a spot in the state championship.  The Advocate
  • High school basketball has entered postseason as the LHSAA girls playoffs kick off the Marsh Madness championship event this week at SLU’s University Center in Hammond, while boys playoffs will conclude next week at Burton Coliseum in Lake Charles with key teams vying for the title.  The Advocate
  • The Prairieville Hurricanes girls basketball team won 65+54 over Salmen High and will head to Hammond to play the Slidell Tigers at Southeastern on Thursday at 8 p.m.  The Advocate
