COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mt. Zion First Baptist Church near T.J. Jemison Boulevard will rededicate its renovated 168-year-old building this weekend — Saturday's ceremony at 4 p.m. features musical guests Clarence Jones and Heritage and Sunday's ribbon-cutting at 9 a.m. with a worship service led by Pastor Rene F. BUSINESS NEWS

  • Tsunami Sushi owners filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection while promising to keep their Baton Rouge, Lafayette and New Orleans restaurants open. The reorganization will finish in the coming months (to manage their debts).  The Advocate
  • Tech giants signed a pledge at the White House on March 3 to cover AI data center electricity costs aimed at protecting local ratepayers, and Entergy announced agreements on Thursday expected to save Louisiana customers $800 million over 20 years (Public Service Commission monitoring long-term impacts).  WAFB 9
  • Louisiana Economic Development and Baton Rouge Area Foundation plan to convert the vacant former Tin Roof Brewing at 1624 Wyoming St. into Proof Works, an incubator for carbon capture startups. Located near LSU and downtown, the incubator will soon offer lab space and programming to help early-stage companies develop products.  The Advocate
  • Middendorf’s Seafood Restaurant will bring its kitchen to Baton Rouge at Passé Restaurant in the Origin Hotel on St. Ferdinand St from March 17–20 and March 24–27, serving lunch and dinner with its signature Thin Fried Catfish. Chef Horst Pfeifer said the event will offer locals a taste of the restaurant’s 91-year legacy.  WAFB 9

CRIME NEWS

  • On Thursday morning, a weapon was found in a student's backpack at Baton Rouge Foreign Language Academic Immersion Magnet elementary school — school officials confirmed the student who reported it was praised and that strict disciplinary measures will be enforced per the school's no-tolerance policy.  WBRZ
  • On Thursday, Brusly Middle School saw extra law enforcement on campus after a report of a potential weapon was investigated and found not credible; metal detectors were used and some students stayed home during the investigation.  WAFB 9

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Shintech is set to invest over $3 billion to upgrade its Iberville Parish facility, creating more than 800 jobs and boosting local tax revenue, while parish officials say the project will benefit schools, the sheriff’s department and local infrastructure.  WJBO
  • Louisiana crawfish farmers face a worker shortage as temporary guest-worker visas (H-2B) are capped during peak harvesting season; Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain and Gov. Landry are asking federal agencies to ease the limits so plants can keep running.  The Advocate

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Louisiana education officials said Thursday that the state's Grow. Achieve. Thrive. system is recognized as the national standard for grading schools, with the first performance scores set to be released in late 2026. The new framework focuses on student progress, proficiency and preparedness for graduation.  WBRZ
  • Southern University delayed start on Thursday after a power outage reported at 7:15 a.m. led to midterm exams being rescheduled and breakfast shifting to a pickup-only service at Mayberry + Dunn halls.  WBRZ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Cleanup crews are tackling more than 12,000 gallons of crude oil spilled after a mechanical failure offshore near Port Fourchon. More than 250 workers and 32 boats + aerial surveys are in use, and officials say no fish or wildlife have been harmed.  WJBO
  • Offshore cleanup crews are working in the Gulf after 12,600 gallons of crude oil spilled from LOOP’s terminal off Grand Isle, and 32 vessels with over 250 personnel have been deployed to recover the oil.  The Advocate

  • Central Middle School students are hosting a blood drive on Monday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the school gym and via the blood bus at Central High to support classmate Blaze Taylor, who was injured in an ATV crash on Feb. 14.  WBRZ
