ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Saturday morning, a fire broke out at the Port of Greater Baton Rouge when wood chips ignited on a conveyor belt used for loading barges — firefighters from West Baton Rouge Fire and EMS responded promptly, containing the blaze with no injuries, though damage may delay operations.  WBRZ

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Tech companies will get tax breaks as data centers begin construction in Louisiana. Meta asked for cuts for a $27 billion project in north Louisiana, and state and local groups may offer billions for items like servers & electric work.  WBRZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • LSU doctoral student M.G. Taylor built a protective exoskeleton to reduce fatigue and injuries for construction workers (especially women) using a harness and backpack-style motor pouch. The team will begin user testing soon to ensure a comfortable, effective fit on job sites.  LSU Reveille
  • Louisiana higher education leaders are planning changes as some public schools face falling enrollment and budget challenges; University of New Orleans will join the LSU System on July 1 to bolster specialized programs — officials say the move aims to better match education with job market needs.  The Advocate

  • Heavy storms flooded parts of the capital area late Saturday night through Sunday as residents in Denham Springs saw yards fill with water—Baton Rouge reported over 20 weather-related calls including emergency rescues.  WBRZ

  • The Plaquemine Fire Department renamed its Central Fire Station on Sunday to honor the Ramirez family (a 140-year legacy that includes former chief Yves G. Ramirez and current chief Darren Ramirez).  WBRZ

  • Spring allergy season is returning, and experts at Baton Rouge Clinic advise starting daily over-the-counter treatment (sneezing, congestion) to help ease symptoms and suggest a doctor consultation if relief fades.  WAFB 9

  • Blue Bayou Waterpark will reopen this summer under new management and will officially open on May 16 as part of the Soak'n Fun brand after its closure last season.  WJBO

  • The No. 4 Florida Gators beat No. 2 LSU gymnastics Sunday night in Gainesville with a season-high team score (198.450-198.325). LSU has one meet left and will face Arkansas in Baton Rouge Friday night.  WBRZ
  • LSU baseball lost its rubber match to Sacramento State on Sunday, Mar. 08 as the Tigers scored their first run in the seventh inning (they managed only six hits) during a cold offensive performance.  WBRZ
  • LSU baseball lost a rubber match to Sacramento State on March 8 as its offense went cold& scoring its first run only in the seventh inning and managing just six hits to fall to a 4-5 record after an undefeated start.  WBRZ
  • Two Baton Rouge brothers and their mom have launched i9 Sports, a new youth league offering flag football, soccer, T-ball and baseball for kids aged 3 to 13 at BREC Claycut Bayou Park starting April 11. The program provides a less hectic sports option for families.  The Advocate
