COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Baker police officers and firefighters were honored Tuesday at Baker City Council for helping deliver baby Imani Walker in the Walmart parking lot on March 4, marking a proud moment for local first responders.  WBRZ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Construction continues on a new Mexican-inspired restaurant named Vals at 7242 Perkins Road, with the pink-painted building set to open later this year. The property, purchased for $1.5 million in April, was formerly home to Rock Paper Taco.  The Advocate

CULTURE NEWS

  • DiGiulio Brothers Italian Café, a neighborhood staple on Perkins Road along the Wearing of the Green Parade route, serves Italian dishes made from family recipes; opened in 1987 by John and Fred DiGiulio, it is now managed by bartender Mike Johnson and his wife (Raina) honoring family tradition.  WBRZ
  • The Old State Capitol in downtown Baton Rouge will display the original Louisiana Purchase document, signed by Napoleon Bonaparte, from April 14 to mark America’s 250th anniversary. Governor Jeff Landry announced the exhibit during his State of the State speech and advised visitors to reserve a time slot.  WBRZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Southern University’s School of Nursing is once again a top-five finalist for best nursing school in the United States. The school — which reached 10,000 people via its mobile health unit — will expand with a new 69,000 sqft building funded by local hospitals to ease the state’s nursing shortage.  WAFB 9
  • Education Secretary Linda McMahon endorsed Governor Jeff Landry’s request to double funding for LA GATOR (a program that provided scholarships for 5,600 K-12 students) in an effort to expand private school tuition aid by reaching 4,000-5,000 more students. The funding request came during the legislative session early this week.  WAFB 9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Louisiana DOTD announced plans to test air taxis and electric VTOL aircraft under an FAA program; testing will be led mainly at Houma-Terrebonne Airport with DOTD covering its own costs and partnering with private companies. Gov. Jeff Landry supports the innovation effort to boost state aviation.  WBRZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Louisiana Department of Health closed its East Baton Rouge Health Unit at 353 N. 12th St. to find a new compliant facility with the mayor's office. Health services are available at other parishes and businesses may contact the Bienville Building (628 N. 4th St.) for permits.  WBRZ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Baton Rouge teen weightlifter Baron Baker set three American Olympic records at the Arnold Classic/American Open Series this weekend. The 17-year-old & honor student qualified for the American Youth World team to compete in Cali, Colombia this summer.  WAFB 9
  • LSU Tigers face Kentucky in the SEC Tournament this morning in Nashville, with Max Mackinnon averaging 15.3 points. Southern Jaguars will play Arkansas-Pine Bluff tomorrow in College Park, led by Michael Jacobs who averages 17.6 points.  WJBO
