COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Eleven fallen firefighters were honored Saturday at the Louisiana Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Baton Rouge. Names—including two local first responders—were added to the memorial wall as family, coworkers, and community members gathered for the ceremony + procession.  WAFB 9
  • Habitat for Humanity and LSU sororities and fraternities built a new home for a local family as part of the 21st annual Greek Week build, revealed to the family on Saturday. About 500 volunteers worked together over a week of construction to complete the home.  WBRZ
  • LSU students and campus groups participated in Geaux Big Baton Rouge last week as part of the week-long service event focused on cleaning campus and nearby areas. Volunteers sorted recyclables and picked up trash around LSU Lakes and Milford Wampold Memorial Park (including campus signs and green spaces).  LSU Reveille

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Currency Bank aims to lead banking for small and midsize businesses in the capital region, said CEO Scott Gaudin. The bank, which has $250 million in assets + strong local roots, is growing through targeted acquisitions and personalized service.  The Advocate

CULTURE NEWS

  • Baton Rouge Ballet Theatre teams with Alo Bloom to present a fresh production of Rapunzel that highlights self-confidence over magical hair — the production will play April 17 and 18 at the Baton Rouge River Center for Performing Arts and feature a surprise appearance by the local High step team.  WBRZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • LSU Student Government launched an AI Taskforce to cut false AI misuse reports + working with the Student Advocacy and Accountability office and faculty to require stronger proof and encourage classroom conversations. Co-chairs James Williams III and Jude Terrell are guiding the effort and invite student input.  LSU Reveille

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • BREC is planning to install an AI surveillance system in parks to provide real-time alerts (it will not record audio). Community members remain divided on the system, and commissioners extended contracts by one month as they review the plan.  WBRZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Baton Rouge pediatrician, Dr. Susan Bankston, advises parents to prepare children for summer camp by discussing daily routines, encouraging independence with dressing and hygiene, and completing required medical papers so kids feel ready for overnight camp.  WAFB 9

SPORTS NEWS

  • LSU announced that Will Wade returned as the men’s basketball coach as students welcomed his renewed focus on the team, and the school will invest between $12 and $15 million in a NIL fund to boost its future success.  LSU Reveille
  • LSU Baseball head coach Jay Johnson said his team made a decisive comeback with a 17-10 win over No. 19 ranked Kentucky Wildcats after trailing by seven runs. The Tigers improved to 19-10 and will host the Southern Jaguars tomorrow before facing Tennessee this weekend.  LSU Reveille
  • LSU Baseball rallied to a 17-10 win over ranked Kentucky, with outfielder Derek Curiel’s solo home run and infielder Seth Dardar’s three-run homer turning the game at Alex Box. The Tigers will host Southern before playing in a SEC series.  LSU Reveille
  • LSU Baseball beat the Kentucky Wildcats last night in a nail-biting finish for their first series win this season, with a key Grand Slam by John Pearson + a memorable home run celebration by Seth DarDar. The Tigers will host the Southern Jaguars Tuesday at Alex Box.  LSU Reveille
