COMMUNITY NEWS

  • West Baton Rouge Parish launched the Autism Awareness Alert Program to help first responders support people with autism and their families. The sheriff’s office is offering optional vehicle and home stickers along with a database to alert responders during emergencies.  WAFB 9

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Dutch Bros Coffee will open a second Baton Rouge store in Livingston Parish at Juban Crossing, between McDonald’s and RaceTrac. The Livingston Parish Planning Commission will hold a public hearing for the final site plan (April 7 meeting); the chain already has a Baton Rouge store that opened in October.  The Advocate

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Economic development director Ashleigh McHugh said Zachary is growing with new businesses like Planet Fitness and 7 Brew coffeehouse and a national quick-service chain showing interest, though the city still seeks a grocery store and more entertainment venues. Construction is underway for the Wellcome Country Store and downtown projects continue.  The Advocate

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Zachary Community School District choirs won Sweepstakes honors at the Louisiana Music Educators Association Choir Festival. The awards went to choirs from Copper Mill, Northwestern Middle, and Zachary High led by Emma Lawton, Cassi Doherty, and Cierra Fountain — a recognition of their music education excellence.  The Advocate
  • Families can register for upcoming swim lessons ahead of summer at Crawfish Aquatics, which offers private and group classes at two Baton Rouge locations: one on Siegen Lane for the youngest swimmers (ages 2 to 28 months) and one at Bluebonnet for children aged 3 to 14 years.  WAFB 9

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A failing sewage discharge line in Denham Heights has caused raw wastewater to back up into yards and ditches, raising health concerns. Livingston Parish has hired a contractor to investigate the issue — funds are currently insufficient to repair the system.  WBRZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Baton Rouge attorney Neil Sweeney is suing LSU after workers removed his bench from University Lakes in November 2024, triggering a dispute over Lot Z. The suit was filed in October; the next hearing is set for May 27 (bench removal is central to the legal fight).  The Advocate
  • Zachary City Council will hold a hearing on April 14 at City Hall to investigate if the 593 Motorsports Kart Club track on W.J. Wicker Road violated its conditional-use permit by installing unauthorized signage and parking lot after hosting races. Officials have issued subpoenas as the probe nears completion.  The Advocate
  • Coastal Day 2026 took place on Monday at the Louisiana Legislature, where attendees spoke with staff from the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority about upcoming construction projects and partner-led work while networking with coastal contractors and vendors.  WBRZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • At Ochsner hospitals, the Eat Fit program lowered healthy meal prices by 50% so that options like pork loin now cost $2.25, and data shows an increase in healthy food sales. The initiative started last year and has helped patients, staff, and local workers make better meal choices.  The Advocate

SPORTS NEWS

  • LSU basketball head coach Will Wade has signed a seven-year deal to return to the Tigers. The contract (effective March 26, 2026 until March 31, 2033) includes a base salary with escalating supplemental pay and performance incentives, along with early termination penalties.  WBRZ
  • The auction at Lelands 2026 Spring Classic will feature Shaquille O'Neal's 1992 LSU All-American Team John R. Wooden Award plus over 1,000 items, including trophies won by Calvin Borel, and ends April 18. The award honors O'Neal’s standout season when he averaged 24.1 points and 14 rebounds per game.  WBRZ
