COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Engineers will begin a $2.1 million project early 2027 to add new turn lanes and a tree-lined median to Burbank Drive near the Burbank Soccer Complex, easing congestion and boosting safety for local families (local leaders and federal funds backed the plan).  The Advocate
  • A coalition from local unions and community groups sent an open letter to Hyundai’s CEO Monday asking for a meeting on a community benefit agreement for a $5.8 billion steel mill in Ascension Parish (raising worker rights and local displacement concerns).  The Advocate

CULTURE NEWS

  • Opéra Louisiane (led by LSU alum Paul Groves) is set to perform Puccini's Madama Butterfly on April 11 at the River Center Theatre. The production features leading performers and costumes loaned from the New Orleans Opera Association as the company returns to a larger venue for its season finale.  225 Magazine
  • Opéra Louisiane will present Puccini’s Madama Butterfly for one night only on April 11 at 7 p.m. at the River Center Theatre while the production, featuring Teresa Perrotta’s Baton Rouge debut, pairs with screenings of a 1974 film on April 6 and a documentary on April 7 at the Main Library.  WBRZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Attorney Gordon McKernan has launched the sixth annual Gordon’s Grads giveaway where Louisiana high school seniors graduating this year and enrolled for fall must submit a 500-word essay or 90-second video & compete for 15 free MacBook Neo laptops with winners set to be announced on May 4.  WAFB 9
  • The state Senate approved a bill that requires public school districts to hold classes five days a week, with districts on a four-day schedule staying exempt if they maintain an A rating (aiming to ease childcare access challenges for families).  WJBO
  • A state representative has proposed a bill that would allow military veterans to serve as school resource officers in public, private, and charter schools—bringing experienced service members into school safety roles. The proposal is currently under review in the state legislature.  WAFB 9
  • LSU, along with nine SEC schools, will offer a new joint course on college athletics this fall in the Ogden Honors College. The hybrid course—combining Zoom sessions and in-person classes—will prepare students for careers in sports management and media.  The Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • French Settlement will begin installing a new water main next week; contractors for Utilities Inc. of Louisiana will shut off water along La. 444 next Tuesday (including Kinchen, King George, Acosta Lane, Plantation Trace and Wanda Lee) to complete the upgrade.  WBRZ
  • The Louisiana DOTD announced overnight lane closures in Baton Rouge for I-10 widening work. The southbound I-110 ramps will shut from 9 or 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. April 10 to 13, while the I-10 flyover will close April 17 to 20 (weather permitting).  The Advocate

  • Nominations are open for Business Report’s Excellence in Health Care Awards, honoring leaders and teams who improve care delivery across the Capital Region. All submissions are due by April 17 and award honorees will be celebrated at a formal ceremony on Aug. 12 at the Crowne Plaza in Baton Rouge.  225 Magazine
  • The USDA reported that certain Great Value dinosaur chicken nuggets from Walmart may contain lead; the 29-ounce packages (produced on Feb. 10 with a best-by date one year later) could still be in freezers.  WBRZ
