CRIME NEWS

  • Baton Rouge Police arrested Daniel Westley, 39, Friday, April 4 for the fatal shooting of 80-year-old James Williams (known as Uncle Pig) whose body was found Tuesday on his Avenue E porch.  WAFB 9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at the East Baton Rouge Parish Career and Technical Education Center built an ADA-compliant playhouse that opened at Southdowns Pre-K Center where children now enjoy dramatic play. Principal Shalika Scott said the playhouse meets the needs of a center with many special needs students (about 65% require accommodations).  WBRZ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Chevron was ordered by a jury yesterday to pay at least $740 million to restore coastal wetlands damaged by decades of illegal operations—this ruling may lead other oil firms to settle similar lawsuits as the award, which breaks down into $575 million for land loss, $161 million for contamination, and $8.6 million for abandoned equipment, has grown to over $1.1 billion with interest. The decision follows a landmark trial that could set a precedent for future environmental litigation in the region.  WVLA
  • Baby jaguar Lacumba III, born last December, debuted at the Baton Rouge Zoo on April 4; she is the first jaguar born at the zoo in over 20 years—supporters cast votes with $1 donations to fund conservation efforts and name her through a community process.  225 Magazine
  • Louisiana climatologist Jay Grymes warned that heavy rain will push the Mississippi River above flood stage in the next days and flash floods are expected in parts of the Midwest and Mid-South with severe weather approaching Baton Rouge starting Saturday night. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers may start flood fight phases mid-month and river levels could reach 40 feet—near the protection level of the local levees.  WVLA
