COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank will launch Groceries on the Geaux, a mobile market program, this summer with $1.797 million plus funding to cover a delivery vehicle and three years of operating costs. It will serve 11 parishes by offering fresh produce, proteins and shelf-stable goods at affordable prices.  WBRZ
  • Rescue Alliance will partner with Kris Rotonda for its largest fundraiser yet on Tuesday, Apr. 14 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. via Facebook Live, aiming to raise $15,000 with interactive challenges & matching donations to enhance animal care.  The Advocate

CULTURE NEWS

  • Zachary’s Downtown Live at the Gazebo concert series will kick off on April 25 with Baton Rouge-based Bucket List performing at the Virginia Street gazebo (free entry encourages community support) and will feature Spring Chickens Bluegrass Band on May 9.  The Advocate
  • The Hello Kitty Cafe Truck is set to make two stops in Louisiana during its 10th anniversary tour later this year. Fans will enjoy themed treats and merchandise at each location.  WAFB 9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tongia Sanders, director of East Feliciana’s Community Learning afterschool program, was named the 2026 Afterschool Champion by the Louisiana Center for Afterschool Learning. She represented her school at the Afterschool for All Challenge in Washington, D.C. in March and will work with community leaders & policymakers to boost programs.  The Advocate
  • Evgeniya Ashley, a Prairieville student at LSU, was elected to membership in Phi Kappa Phi (an invitation-only honor society that inducts about 20,000 members annually).  The Advocate
  • DEMCO is accepting scholarship entries from co-op members attending Louisiana public colleges. The company will hold a drawing on May 9 to award a $1,250 scholarship per semester for two consecutive semesters during the 2026-27 academic year.  The Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Southern University Board of Supervisors approved funding for new student housing at the Baton Rouge campus during a special meeting Tuesday, Apr. 7; the project will be supported by the Southern University System Foundation and the Louisiana Public Facilities Authority.  WBRZ

SPORTS NEWS

  • LSU men’s track and field held a No.1 outdoor ranking with 281.61 points after winning at the Battle of the Bayou in Baton Rouge, while the women dropped to No.7 despite senior Ella Onojuvwevwo’s record 400-meter dash. The team will next compete at the Baylor Invitational Friday.  LSU Reveille
  • Will Wade has hired long-time coach Rick Stansbury as associate head coach for LSU's 2026-2027 basketball season. Stansbury — known for his success at Mississippi State, Western Kentucky, and Memphis — brings decades of leadership to the team.  WBRZ
  • Caroline Bradley, the top center in the 2027 recruiting class, committed to LSU (home of the Lady Tigers) to join the women’s basketball program. Her decision is set to boost the team in upcoming seasons.  WAFB 9
  • LSU Football spring practice is underway (coach Lane Kiffin addressed the media from the Team Room this Tuesday at 11 a.m.) with drills scheduled for Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday until Friday, April 24 as the team prepares for its opener against Clemson on Sept. 5.  WAFB 9
