  • Habitat for Humanity of Greater Baton Rouge started a community build on Saturday in a Dayton subdivision for a new home for Kiana and her daughter. Volunteers will work Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. over the next 8 to 10 weeks with partial HOME funds.  WBRZ
  • New Sunlight Baptist Church is hosting an upcoming spring event to welcome residents to the season. The community gathering at the church aims to celebrate local spirit and offer a chance to reconnect.  WAFB 9
  • A group of veterans returning from Washington, D.C. will be welcomed at Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport on Saturday; organizers ask attendees to park by 9:30 p.m. and be ready as the plane lands at 10:15 p.m. — community members unite to honor their service.  WBRZ
  • Officials in West Baton Rouge Parish are gearing up for Love the Boot Week from April 18 to April 26 by offering volunteer cleanup events with provided supplies like gloves and tongs. Interested residents can sign up to join teams and help improve local outdoor spaces.  WBRZ

  • Advocate Christina Martin and Rep. Alonzo Knox have introduced a bill that shifts the burden of proof for special education disputes from parents to schools (approved by the House Education Committee on Wednesday) to help families secure needed services.  The Advocate

HEALTH NEWS

  • Hundreds wore teal during Saturday, Apr. 11's Geaux Teal Ovarian Cancer Walk in Baton Rouge to honor survivors and raise ovarian cancer awareness. The 1.5-mile walk was followed by the LSU Softball team hosting its game against Arizona at 5 p.m.  WBRZ
  • EPA is overseeing cleanup at the Smitty’s Supply site in Roseland following an explosion; tests of water and sediment along the Tangipahoa River found chemicals below screening limits (per an EPA release). Some residents still report health issues as state and company teams continue work.  WBRZ

SPORTS NEWS

  • LSU women’s basketball landed its first transfer portal commitment from guard Laila Reynolds from Florida on Saturday morning. Head coach Kim Mulkey said Reynolds (a three-season SEC athlete) filled a major gap after the team lost two guards.  LSU Reveille
  • Southern softball swept Arkansas Pine-Bluff at Lady Jaguar Field on Sunday, April 12 with a 10-2 win in game three—improving its SWAC record to 13-5. The team has six regular season games left as they will face Grambling next week and Prairie View A&M at home.  WBRZ
