COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Baton Rouge firefighters won first place in the Pensacola Beach Firefighter Challenge today by completing the sand course in 56.34 seconds (defending last year’s title). The team’s coordinated relay work highlighted their strong performance.  WAFB 9
  • The Rotary Club of Baker was named Club of the Year by the city and InterClub Council after a 50-year milestone celebration. The club supported early literacy programs, youth scholarships & local events that have strengthened community ties.  The Advocate
  • Parole Project marks its 10-year milestone by hosting Second Chance Week (Apr. 13-17) as founder Andrew Hundley visited 2une In on Tuesday to highlight the program’s success in helping formerly incarcerated residents with a recidivism rate under 3%.  WBRZ

  • Louisiana Art and Science Museum will host Train Day with interactive train exhibits and hands-on activities for families to learn about rail history. Check local sources for timing and location details.  WAFB 9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The House Education Committee advanced a bill Tuesday (April 14) that requires students who lose their TOPS scholarships to repay the funds to the state. Lawmakers say the measure is meant to ensure accountability for state aid.  WAFB 9

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Ochsner Health Center in Denham Springs reopened patient appointments on Tuesday, April 14 after a car backed into the facility on March 5 caused a loss of power. Repairs were completed and no injuries were reported as patients were moved to nearby centers during the closure.  WBRZ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Sports Illustrated and Travel + Leisure Co. plan to convert the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center into a sports-themed resort with investment from Shaquille O’Neal; renovations will begin early 2027 and are expected to complete late 2027 downtown.  WAFB 9
  • LSU added transfer point guard Jada Williams, formerly at Iowa State, to boost its women’s basketball lineup. Former LSU guard Flau'jae Johnson was drafted eighth overall in the WNBA draft and traded to the Seattle Storm + marks a notable move for the program.  WJBO
  • Maurepas softball clinched the District 7-C title with four straight wins, including a 13-2 victory on April 1, and now awaits playoff pairings this week with a chance at a first-round bye and home games, setting up a run to the state championship tournament in Sulphur beginning May 1.  The Advocate
  • LSU football head coach Lane Kiffin led spring practice on Tuesday as he prepared the Tigers for his September debut. The team will open the season on Sept. 5 against Clemson in Death Valley.  WBRZ
  • LSU senior Flau'jae Johnson (a guard from Georgia) was traded by the Golden State Valkyries to the Seattle Storm after being drafted eighth overall on Monday in New York City.  WJBO
  • LSU Football spring practice continues as head coach Lane Kiffin briefs the media from the team room (Football Ops) every Tuesday at 11:25 a.m. The five-week session ends Friday, April 24 with the regular season set to kick off against Clemson on Sept. 5.  WAFB 9
