  • Will Campbell, a future NFL draft pick and former LSU offensive tackle, visited Our Lady of the Lake Children's Hospital to deliver Easter baskets with iPads, signed Mike the Tiger posters, LSU beanies, Cane's meals and gift cards donated by the Children's Miracle Foundation. He said giving back to his community meant a lot—he once looked up to LSU players and now hopes to inspire patients as he prepares for a new chapter in his career.  The Advocate

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Southeastern Louisiana University and the College of Business announced the appointment of Wayne Ricks as the new director of the Louisiana Small Business Development Center, and he will oversee daily operations and support small businesses in parishes—Livingston, St. Helena, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, and Washington. Ricks, who has served as a senior consultant and interim director, will work with local leaders to guide the center's strategic efforts.  The Advocate

CRIME NEWS

  • Four family members pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and obstruction after authorities said 17-year-old Da’Sean Conley beat and shot Gerard Nicholas Richard on Feb. 12 on the Huey P. Long Bridge—reportedly because he disapproved of the victim dating his mother.  The Advocate
  • Police said 68-year-old Rose Davillier was fatally beaten in her Baton Rouge home Monday night after a suspect gained entry—officers reported the suspect fled before they arrived.  The Advocate

EDUCATION NEWS

  • East Baton Rouge Parish Superintendent LaMont Cole has proposed closing four elementary schools, one middle school, and merging Capitol Middle and High schools in a plan that will redraw attendance zones for 28 schools and reassign thousands of students. A final vote is expected May 1 and if approved the changes will take effect in August while saving at least $5.3 million in deferred maintenance.  The Advocate
  • Dutchtown High School's Business Math teacher Mark Dubreuil used a grant from the Ascension Fund to let nearly 40 students practice budgeting with a virtual account challenge—students managed expenses, fees, and payments while only three maintained a balanced account and earned certificates.  The Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State lawmakers are planning major changes at the DOTD to speed up road work by creating a new office outside the department to manage road projects—four bills were approved in a three-hour hearing as frustration mounts over long repair delays. The new office may take on extra duties if more functions transfer from the DOTD while the state also moves to privatize several services.  The Advocate
