ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Baton Rouge Police Department is investigating a fatal crash on April 9 in the 3900 block of Blount Road when a Kia Soul traveling west struck an ATV that failed to stop at a stop sign, ejecting both ATV occupants and leaving its 12 year old driver, Jayce Wright, dead (the Kia's occupants sustained minor injuries).  WVLA

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Baton Rouge-based b1Bank now has nearly $8 billion in assets after years of growth and acquisitions, and it is expanding into Texas to serve suburban areas around Dallas and Houston—efforts that mark its push to become a major regional player.  The Advocate

CRIME NEWS

  • A woman pleaded guilty to manslaughter and cruelty to juveniles after her daughter Blessing Buckles was beaten to death while left with eight children at home when she and an accomplice left to gamble—she will serve 15 years with nearly all of that time suspended while her accomplice is scheduled to appear in court on May 5.  WBRZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • EBR Schools Superintendent LaMont Cole discussed district realignment changes on Wednesday morning—he said his plan, based on data, would close some schools and consolidate others to affect over 10,000 students and 1,400 staff. The proposal will come before the board in May for final approval.  WBRZ
  • Baton Rouge Magnet High School celebrated eight students who earned perfect 36 ACT scores on Wednesday. The group included one freshman, six juniors and one senior and was praised as superstars by a school district spokesperson.  WBRZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Mayor’s Office of Community Development is asking Baton Rouge residents for feedback on the 2025-2029 HUD Consolidated Plan to guide federal housing and community development funds. The Community Needs Survey is open until May 16+ residents can share their input.  WBRZ
  • Louisiana’s Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority approved a nearly $2 billion coastal plan—funding 140 projects to build wetlands, elevate homes and add hurricane protections that now move to the Legislature for final approval. However, $570 million is allocated to the Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion, which is paused for 90 days after Gov. Jeff Landry raised concerns about its cost and impact on the local culture.  The Advocate

  • The Baton Rouge housing market has seen a 2.9% rise in costs as more students and families search for homes, leaving LSU freshman Josephin Melnyk struggling to secure affordable housing near campus.
