CRIME NEWS

  • Detectives are asking the public to help identify men linked to a shooting on Town South Ave—officials say any tips could aid the investigation.  WAFB 9
  • Three former police officers face a court motion hearing Wednesday as a body camera video captured their plan to destroy another recording that may be used in an obstruction charge. The defense claims the conversation was private—but prosecutors say a police station parking lot offers little privacy.  WBRZ
  • Erin Jones, a Baker woman in charge of accounts for a family trucking company near Central, stole 431 checks totaling $334,092 over five years because of her gambling habit and was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Brian Jackson who ordered her to repay the funds (she must turn herself in by May 19th and serve three years of probation with gambling treatment).  The Advocate
  • Defense attorneys for three former Baton Rouge officers said a body camera recording showing them planning to destroy another recording should not be used in court at a motion hearing on Wednesday—prosecutors said the officers had little privacy in a police precinct parking lot as the footage was automatically uploaded.  WBRZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rep. John Illg, Jr. proposed a resolution to stop LSU home games from starting during the day until October by requiring them to begin at 6 p.m.—a measure aimed at reducing heat-related risks. The proposal follows a 2:30 p.m. game that reported 58 heat-related medical assists and turf temperatures of 130 degrees.  LSU Reveille
  • Today, early voting opens as East Baton Rouge Parish voters consider a 4-mill property tax to expand the district attorney’s office—a measure expected to generate about $24 million annually—and St. George residents begin choosing candidates for their first city council. Voting continues through April 26.  WBRZ
  • LDH is under review after a state audit found over $250M in questioned federal costs and repeated compliance failures in Medicaid oversight and financial reporting—issues that stretched back seven years. Gov. Landry appointed Bruce Greenstein as secretary on April 11 and officials plan corrective actions to protect federal funding.  WVLA
