- ➤ A Gonzales man, Bobby Schneider (36), pleaded no contest to manslaughter after strangling and stabbing 60-year-old Sarah Santini during an argument at her Walker home in October 2023 and was sentenced to 25 years in jail. WBRZ
- ➤ Baton Rouge deacon Don Allison survived a 1996 armed robbery when Marcus Cheffen shot him and later forgave him through a victim—offender dialogue program, helping secure a parole hearing for Cheffen who had been sentenced to 95 years and forging a bond that continues to change both their lives. - ➤ Baton Rouge authorities will keep 18-year-old Jeremiah Howze in jail after new evidence shows he repeatedly broke court orders on probation while accused of killing a high school student in January—commissioner Nicole Robinson said his arraignment will be on May 12. WAFB 9

- ➤ The 19th JDC Office of Public Defender said it is underfunded and has a seven-year backlog due to rising violent crime; it has asked the City-Parish to shift part of the $8.7 million funding to them if a May 3 tax measure passes—an idea backed by DA Hillar Moore, Mayor Sid Edwards and several council members.
