CRIME NEWS

  • Baton Rouge police are investigating a homicide after 34-year-old Shaquinnta Scott was found dead in her Monet Drive apartment on April 22 around 10 a.m. with an autopsy ruling her death a homicide and officials urging anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867.  WBRZ
  • Detectives are investigating the homicide of a woman found dead in an empty apartment on Monday morning, April 21—authorities are reviewing evidence to determine the cause of her death.  WAFB 9
  • Christopher Byerley, 45, pleaded guilty after his February 2022 shoplifting arrest at Juban Crossing Shopping Mall led authorities to uncover a theft ring that stole heavy equipment across several parishes—he admitted to charges including transporting a stolen vehicle, falsifying identification numbers, and trafficking firearms in a scheme valued at over $250,000.  WBRZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Southeastern’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences received a $150,000 donation from Woman’s Hospital on April 8 to name the Obstetrics Maternal/Newborn Simulation Lab as part of planned renovations at the Baton Rouge facility — the project will add classrooms, upgraded labs, and telehealth capabilities and is expected to boost nursing program capacity by 32%.  The Advocate
  • LSU will open a new nursing instructional site at its Baton Rouge campus in fall to offer the same courses as LSU Health New Orleans’ School of Nursing—clinical training will be provided through partnerships with Our Lady of the Lake and Woman’s Hospital. The program starts with 30 students and may expand to 90 to address the state's nurse shortage.  WAFB 9
  • William Carey University opened its new Corporate Boulevard nursing campus yesterday—students learned clinical skills using advanced simulation dolls that mimic heartbeats and coughing via an instructor-controlled pad, with a total of 138 students enrolled.  WBRZ
  • Denham Springs High robotics team made history when they became the first Louisiana team to win a division title at the FIRST Robotics World Championships held in Houston from April 16 to 19. The team built a 140—pound robot and outperformed international competitors with support from over two dozen sponsors.  WBRZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Congressman Cleo Fields called for an immediate review of visa revocations affecting international students at Southern University when he requested that federal officials (the Secretary of State, the Secretary of Homeland Security, and the Acting Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) explain the sudden terminations of legal status. He said the actions threaten students' academic careers and damage the nation’s reputation as a welcoming place for global scholarship.  WBRZ
  • The Metro Council will hold a meeting today at 4 p.m. to discuss a proposal from Mayor-President Sid Edwards’ office that would let St. George take over services such as road maintenance—water drainage included—on July 1. Under the agreement, St. George will receive up to $17 million in sales tax revenue with scheduled payments after approval.  WAFB 9
