COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Almost 5,000 people woke up without power on April 23 in parts of East Baton Rouge—Entergy restored power for most customers by 7 a.m. while officials have not given a clear reason for the outage.  WBRZ

CRIME NEWS

  • On Wednesday — April 23 — a 1-year-old child was found alone at the American Inn Hotel on Florida Boulevard, and police are investigating because the parents have not been identified.  WVLA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • LSU announced plans to launch a new nursing program site in Baton Rouge this fall—offering the same rigorous curriculum and clinical training as its New Orleans campus to help address a looming nursing shortage in Louisiana. Enrollment will begin with 30 students and later expand as demand grows.  WVLA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Charles F. Sam III, former National Park Service director, spoke at an Earth Day keynote on April 22 at LSU where he discussed his career, climate change and how community members can help care for nature. His remarks were part of a series hosted by Geaux Green LSU, the Student Sustainability Fund and the Roger Hadfield Ogden Honors College — a call for long-term environmental action.  LSU Reveille

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers activated phase II of its flood fight plan on April 23 when the Mississippi River rose above 15 feet at the Carrollton Gage—this plan will see daily levee patrols from Baton Rouge to Venice as forecasts expect the river to crest at 16.5 feet on April 30.  WVLA
  • Today, the Louisiana State Supreme Court disciplined Judge Eboni Johnson Rose after reports revealed botched cases and racially charged remarks, imposing a two-month suspension, two years of probation and an $11,196.11 fine (set by a joint consent discipline agreement). Several justices criticized the ruling as too lenient in light of her judicial missteps.  WAFB 9
  • TSA officers in Louisiana have intercepted 46 firearms at airport checkpoints so far this year, with 44 loaded, including 5 at Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport and 8 at Lafayette Regional Airport while 28 were found at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport; officers warn that travelers must pack and declare any guns properly to avoid fines or loss of TSA PreCheck privileges.  WVLA
