ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Early Sunday morning, a woman was killed in a car crash on LA-30 near LA-3115 in St. Gabriel when an impaired driver—51-year-old Sea Alteri—failed a breath test and was arrested for driving under the influence and vehicular homicide.  WBRZ

CRIME NEWS

  • In Port Allen, officers arrested 44-year-old Jackie Honore on Friday, April 25 after a traffic stop on Rosehill Drive—where they found a gun, crack, marijuana, synthetic marijuana, a scale and drug tools—and an unrestrained minor was in the car; she is facing charges for illegal gun carrying, drug distribution and resisting an officer.  WBRZ
  • An 18-year-old was found dead in a Dodge on N. 38th Street near Choctaw Drive Saturday night—detectives report no suspect or motive has been identified in the ongoing investigation.  WBRZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On March 20th the Senate Education Committee approved two bills to form a new St. George school district matching the city’s boundaries—Sen. Rick Edmonds led the effort, and no parish school official spoke during the hearing. Supporters say the district could address local education quality issues while opponents worry about legacy costs and potential segregation.  The Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawmakers in Baton Rouge are set to vote today on a bill that would ban balloon releases for people over 16 and fine $150 for a first mistake, $250 for a second, and $500 for further cases. Some families say balloon releases help them remember loved ones—while supporters say the measure will keep power lines, animals, and waterways safe.  WBRZ

  • LSU Health professor Nicolas Bazan leads a team studying elovanoids—natural molecules that help the brain heal after injury and stroke. He will present his findings in Rome this week and his research may pave the way for safer treatments for Alzheimer’s and other brain disorders.  LSU Reveille
