COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Registration for the annual Louisiana Friends Against Childhood Cancer Bass Tournament opens Friday, May 1 at 6 p.m. in Maurepas—participants pay $200 per boat to fish on May 9 for funds for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.  WBRZ
  • Downtown Baton Rouge will host the Night Market on Saturday, May 9 from 4 to 10 p.m. The event will feature local vendors selling food and crafts + opportunities for community engagement.  WAFB 9

CULTURE NEWS

  • LSU photography professor Jeremiah Ariaz was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship on April 14 for The Fourth Estate project; his exhibit is on view at Baton Rouge Gallery (May 1 to 24) with an opening reception on May 6 and an ARTiculate Artist Talk on May 17.  225 Magazine

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A bill passed a Senate subcommittee to create the BLVD at Harding Area Special District for a $50 million shopping center at Harding and Howell. The project, featuring a 45,000 sqft grocery store and retail spaces, will open in fall 2027 and create over 150 jobs.  WBRZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • LSU is reviewing its digital and physical infrastructure to meet updated ADA accessibility standards after the Department of Justice extended compliance to April 26, 2027 — the university has launched a two-year evaluation with the Institute for Human Centered Design to enhance access for students using assistive technology.  LSU Reveille

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A three-year study by the American Lung Association showed that Baton Rouge and Hammond received failing grades for smog and fine particle pollution between 2022 and 2024. The report noted cleaner air in Monroe-Ruston and Shreveport-Bossier City.  The Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Groom Road between Clermont Street and Plank Road will be closed for two weeks starting May 6 as crews replace six cross-drain pipes to improve flood mitigation under the MoveBR initiative. Drivers will detour using Paola Street to access local residences and businesses.  WBRZ

  • Chef Kevin Belton hosts Good 2 Eat on Thursdays at 2une In, where he demonstrates how to make Creamy Chicken in White Wine Sauce using boneless chicken thighs, Creole seasoning, and a rich white wine cream sauce. The segment offers viewers a guide to fresh, local cooking + easy style.  WBRZ

  • Zachary girls' basketball team defended their title under Coach Tammy McClure, winning back-to-back state championships — following a historic win in 2025. Senior Ava Raymond made the winning shot and a parade celebration was cancelled due to weather.  WBRZ
  • On Thursday, Apr. 30, the Zachary Broncos boys' basketball team won their back-to-back state title — a win that added to their eight championships total — but a planned celebration parade was cancelled due to inclement weather.  WBRZ
  • LSU’s softball game against Auburn was moved two hours earlier to a 4 p.m. start at Tiger Park on April 30 due to inclement weather.  WBRZ
