- ➤ Ministry of New Life Church on Eddie Robinson Drive held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 2 to open the Soul Spot, a site where homeless people can shower and pick up gently-used clothing. Men’s showers are available Monday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—women’s showers will be offered Wednesday at the same time. WBRZ

- ➤ Deputy Robert Williams, who broke both legs when he was hit by a car while directing traffic during an oil tank fire response in Livonia, was released from a rehabilitation hospital after a month-long recovery and is expected to make a full recovery—his return was welcomed by his department and community. - ➤ Baton Rouge-born restaurant chain Empire Wingz is opening a new location in West Baton Rouge at 7743 La. Highway 1 in Addis, with owner Vic Smith saying the shop is expected to open in mid-May. The chain has expanded steadily since 2016 and will open more locations in major metros in 2026—likely with franchise operators. 225 Magazine

- ➤ Two people were injured in a shooting on Winbourne Avenue and Eaton Street when police received a call around 9:40 p.m. today; a man driving his car was shot multiple times and a female suspect was grazed near an apartment complex—both are in stable condition at the hospital, authorities said. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore is asking residents to vote on a tax on May 5 that would raise his office’s annual funding from $16 million to $24 million and allow hiring of about 15 prosecutors—he warned that without the added funds the office may lose senior staff and continue struggling to handle its heavy case backlog. The measure, if passed, will also free about $9 million from the city-parish budget to support other criminal justice efforts. WBRZ
- ➤ Baton Rouge Judge Tiffany Foxworth-Roberts is facing removal after the Office of Special Counsel found she repeatedly misled investigators by falsely claiming a military rank and misreporting details about a burglary and insurance claims. She will appear before the Judiciary Commission on May 23—officials say she must also cover the investigation costs. WBRZ
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The Louisiana Department of Health said there were 164 whooping cough cases in the first four months of 2025, surpassing the 153 cases recorded in all of 2024 and marking the highest numbers in at least 35 years. Since September 2024, 40 people have been hospitalized, with most being babies and two infant deaths reported. WBRZ
