ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters responded to a house fire yesterday morning that resulted in two deaths—officials are investigating the cause.  WAFB 9
  • A man aged 24 drowned Saturday when he tried to swim across the high Amite River at Frenchtown Road Conservation Area—emergency responders were called just after 5 p.m. and recovered his body at 7 p.m.  WBRZ

CRIME NEWS

  • Police said four people were hurt in an overnight shooting on the 10,000 block of Florida Boulevard, with one victim found near the I-10/I-12 split at the College Drive exit (suffering a gunshot wound) and two injured at the Circle K on South Sherwood Forest Boulevard (the victims left the scene for help).  WVLA
  • A shooting at a party in Baker left one person dead and one critically injured — police took a suspect into custody while the victim's identity has not yet been released and the investigation continues.  WAFB 9

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • An 82-year-old oil well near Garden Island Bay in southern Plaquemines Parish spewed oil, gas and water for several days after a blowout on April 26 until the Coast Guard regained control and deployed nearly three miles of containment boom—Wild Well Control now plans to cap the well with heavy equipment as cleanup continues.  The Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, lawmakers are discussing lowering insurance costs as Rep. Edmond Jordan’s HB 330 would offer a tax credit to homeowners paying over $3,000 a year in premiums. They are also debating immigration measures including a bill that would criminalize blocking ICE efforts, a plan that would require reporting noncitizens applying for public benefits, and a proposal to remove junk food from SNAP eligibility—Gov. Landry has filed an order to expedite the SNAP change.  WVLA
