Good morning, Baton Rouge.
Baton Rouge police charged 34-year-old Ian Seghers with first-degree murder after electronic surveillance and crime scene evidence linked him to his stepfather's home on Jean Street where 66-year-old Walter Keith Rowland was reported missing on March 9—phone data on March 1 and cadaver dog alerts supported the case even though Rowland's body has not been found.
Baton Rouge residents enjoyed a busy week of local events as the Ascension Parish Library hosted an embroidery workshop on Monday and the West Baton Rouge Library held a Mother’s Day Storytime today while a book signing with LSU sports writer Scott Rabalais took place at La Divina Italian Cafe. Shoppers can take advantage of a Mother’s Day sale at the LSU Museum Store through Sunday, and on Thursday live music at the LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens plus an Egyptian-themed trivia night at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum will offer more fun for the community.
An ambitious coastal restoration project aimed at saving Louisiana’s coast is in jeopardy after Gov. Jeff Landry claimed a withheld study showed it would create far less new land and led the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to suspend its permit.
The project began in 2023 and state officials had until Monday to dispute the move—raising questions about its funding and future steps.
Speaker Pro Tempore Mike Johnson proposed a measure to create a special committee that will study LHSAA policies—focusing on concerns of transparency and fairness in student athletics.
Johnson said the committee will review issues such as due process and ethical standards in high school sports.
The Louisiana Department of Health released letter grades for 924 water systems in 2024 based on Act 98 standards that review operations, maintenance, water quality and customer satisfaction + local systems in Baton Rouge and nearby parishes received grades from A to F.
The report shows how community water systems performed and offers insight into the safety of drinking water.
LSU baseball struggled last weekend in a Texas A&M series by scoring only seven runs in three games and falling to a record of 38-11 overall and 15-9 in the SEC.
The Tigers will now seek a national seed and host Arkansas this weekend at Alex Box Stadium.
Southern University students will learn on May 20 if their documentary film The Hidden Sport wins the 2025 Coca-Cola HBCU Sports Production Grant and highlights the legacy of the SU Human Jukebox.
