COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Families and students lined streets in Denham Springs last Saturday to honor beloved crossing guard Katy Wells, who died after being struck near an elementary school; her funeral was held at Hebron Baptist Church.  WBRZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Voters will decide on May 16 if St. George will separate from the East Baton Rouge Parish School System to form its own school district serving 5,800 students and affecting local employee assignments, taxes, and services, with a transition planned by the 2027 school year.  WBRZ
  • Starting this fall, LSU will offer a bachelor's degree in artificial intelligence—the first in the state—through its College of Engineering. The program includes courses in computer science, mathematics, and AI ethics to prepare future engineers for cutting-edge challenges.  WBRZ

  • Residents across East Baton Rouge Parish safely disposed of household hazardous items last Saturday at the Spring 2026 Collection Day — a free event aimed at protecting the environment, as noted by Mayor-President Sid Edwards.  WBRZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Heavy rains have flooded roads in Baton Rouge, and the fire department rescued 15 people on Friday amid a flash flood warning—AAA and first responders urge drivers to avoid flooded areas since even six inches of water can make a vehicle lose control.  WBRZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Metro Health held its 13th annual Red Wig Walk on Saturday at AZ Young Park to raise awareness for HIV prevention, treatment, and support in Baton Rouge. The event featured live music, giveaways, and educational resources to help reduce transmission in the community.  WBRZ
  • NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) is offering mental health resources during Mental Health Awareness Month to help residents access support across Louisiana.  WAFB 9

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • LSU Golf Course closed its doors to the public on Saturday, May 9; crews are now removing equipment to prep the site for a shutdown on June 30 (the property's future use remains undecided) as LSU supports employees during the transition.  WBRZ
  • Over 1,060 homes were sold in East Baton Rouge Parish (GBRAR data) in early 2026, showing a steady start despite high insurance costs and taxes that affect affordability. Local agents expect the market to remain balanced as price adjustments and new listings keep activity high.  The Advocate
