EDUCATION NEWS

  • Southern University is expanding its housing with a new $43 million dorm for freshmen and sophomores+ the project is part of a $77 million expansion that adds upper-level apartment-style units, study rooms and a recreational quad, with completion expected by fall 2027.  WBRZ
  • St. George leaders propose a new school district on the May 16 ballot that could divert about $60 million from Baton Rouge schools, forcing spending cuts up to 9%. Set to start in July 2027, the district would use strong tax collections to offer a tax cut (Mayor Dustin Yates).  The Advocate
  • LSU will offer a bachelor’s degree in Artificial Intelligence starting in the fall, making it the first university in the state with a dedicated AI program. The curriculum includes 20 courses in math, computer science + ethics, and a master’s in applied AI is planned for next year.  WBRZ

SPORTS NEWS

  • LSU baseball was run-ruled by Georgia in game three in Athens, winning 12-1 in seven innings + it marked the Bulldogs' first series sweep over the Tigers. The Tigers now stand at 29-24 and will host Florida next week.  WBRZ
  • After days of rain and delays, Baton Rouge baseball teams completed the LHSAA Tournament semifinals and five teams will compete for the State Championship next week.  WBRZ
  • LSU softball was selected as the No. 16 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament and will host regional games at Tiger Park next week with Akron, South Alabama and Virginia Tech; if the Tigers win they will advance to the Super Regional in Tuscaloosa.  WBRZ
