COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Businesses on Kalurah Street near Perkins Road experienced repeated flooding during rain events, and a Baywood Avenue homeowner said his workshop suffered damage as water filled his yard. Kiewit-Boh said they will boost drainage capacity in future project phases.  WBRZ
  • Cat Haven will open a new facility at 530 Shadows Lane later this summer, featuring the area's first cat café and an expanded shelter with an upgraded surgical wing for rescued felines. The nonprofit has raised over $2 million & is aiming for a $3 million goal.  225 Magazine

  • Officials said one person was taken to a Baton Rouge hospital following a fire late Tuesday, May 12 (investigators are determining the cause).  WAFB 9

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Dog Den Inn, a new second home for dogs, is set to open next month on Coursey Boulevard at 11872 Coursey Blvd and will offer daycare, boarding, grooming and training services in a 1,400 sqft space formerly home to Mary's Nails.  The Advocate

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Louisiana topped a national education report card with students ranking first in reading growth and second in math growth, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. The report noted rising absenteeism (from 18.8% in 2022 to 22% in 2025) and highlighted improvements in districts like West Baton Rouge Parish.  WBRZ
  • St. Amant High School’s Class of 2026 will graduate at 7 p.m. today at The Pit stadium, with backup plans at Lamar-Dixon Expo Center if inclement weather occurs. Top graduates Kendall Fournet and Gage Cook will attend Johns Hopkins and LSU, respectively.  The Advocate
  • Senate Bill 347 would add deepfakes to power-based conduct violations on college campuses, requiring administrators to provide students with information on reporting incidents four times per academic year starting fall (a move designed to protect student privacy), and the bill passed committee unanimously to be heard on the House floor.  The Advocate

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Starting this month, crews will remove at least 18 abandoned vessels from Lake Maurepas over three weeks to clear debris and improve safety ahead of the summer boating season (the project is funded by a $500,000 grant from Air Products in partnership with Osprey Initiative).  WBRZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Wednesday, the BREC commission voted unanimously to begin negotiations with Brooks Williams for superintendent of the parks agency. Williams, the city manager and CEO for Ferris, Texas, was selected from three finalists who interviewed in Baton Rouge.  The Advocate

SPORTS NEWS

  • LSU Heisman-winning quarterback Jayden Daniels will appear on the third season of Netflix’s Quarterback series with three NFL players when the show airs July 14. Daniels began his LSU career (first under coach Brian Kelly), earned the 2023 Heisman trophy, and was drafted second overall by the Commanders.  WBRZ
  • The U-High Cubs are heading to Sulphur for the Division III Select finals against No.-2 seeded Newman. The tournament starts today at 11 a.m. at McMurry Park with follow-up games on Friday and Saturday if needed.  WBRZ
  • The Catholic High Bears baseball team is set to begin their best-of-three state title series today at 5:30 p.m. in Sulpher as they face Brother Martin, with head coach Brad Bass praising the team’s resilience.  WBRZ
