CRIME NEWS

  • Police arrested 20-year-old Latrell Daniels Tuesday for a fatal armed robbery at a gas station on Airline Highway where 30-year-old Alejandro Gonzalez-Martinez was shot on April 12 after he tried to reclaim his bike — a tip from Crime Stoppers led to the arrest.  WBRZ
  • An Amite tax preparer, Todd Ramon Mabry, was arrested Tuesday in Baton Rouge on charges of attempted theft, computer fraud—and filing false public records after he allegedly submitted a false tax withholding form in a client's name to claim $158,233 in fabricated gambling winnings from L’Auberge Casino and attempted to secure a $25,552 state income tax refund.  WBRZ

  • A five-year-old student from Delmont Elementary was left on a bus for several hours on Monday after being dropped off at 7:15 a.m. — he was found at 2 p.m. by a woman on another bus, and the bus driver was fired as officials reviewed safety protocols.  WBRZ

FINANCE NEWS

  • Consumer Reports advises Baton Rouge residents to set up an emergency fund by reviewing monthly expenses—calculating the amount needed to cover three to six months of essentials—and setting up automatic transfers to a high-yield savings account amid rising costs and uncertain incomes.  WAFB 9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Metro Council approved three measures rededicating millages to fund law enforcement raises and parish improvement projects. The approved measures include extending the library tax (11 mills), renewing the mosquito abatement tax (1 mill for 10 years), and renewing the aging council tax (2.25 mills) to help address a projected $40 million funding gap.  WBRZ
  • Former East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President Kip Holden died on Wednesday morning, May 14 at age 72. He led local government for many years – his work left a lasting mark on community development.  WAFB 9
