- ➤ Today the Scotlandville Branch Library began its $8.8 million renovation and expansion when a gold shovel event was held at 10 a.m. at 7373 Scenic Highway—attended by Library Board President Candace Temple, Library Director Katrina Stokes, Mayor-President Sid Edwards, and Councilman Anthony Kenney. The project, funded by a 10-year dedicated property tax without bonds, will add over 24,000 square feet with a Black Heritage Room, meeting rooms, and outdoor areas and will take about 10 months to complete. - ➤ Governor Jeff Landry said he will issue executive orders—after 10 inmates escaped from Orleans Parish jail at 1 a.m. Friday, three were caught and seven are still at large—as he calls for a full audit and changes to jail practices to stop future escapes. The Advocate
- ➤ Authorities investigated the homicide of 34-year-old Shaquinnta Scott whose decayed body was found in an abandoned apartment on Monet Drive in Melrose East—her family last saw her at a gathering on March 30 and now seeks answers. The Advocate

- ➤ Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry and law enforcement agencies will provide an update on Sunday around 5 p.m. on the search for 10 inmates who escaped from the Orleans Justice Center on May 16—three have been recaptured, three jail employees were suspended, and rewards have increased for tips on the seven still at large. - ➤ Baton Rouge police are searching for a man accused of shooting his girlfriend, who died Sunday morning near Gerald and San Clemente drives — officials are investigating the case as a domestic homicide. WBRZ

- ➤ LSU held its 319th commencement ceremonies on May 16-17 — with separate diploma events per college — where the spring Class of 2025 earned bachelor's, master's, and doctorate degrees, and graduates came from local parishes including Ascension and East Baton Rouge. The Advocate
- ➤ Senate Bill 105, proposed by Sen. Mark Abraham, was approved by the Senate Education Committee and now heads to the Senate floor for debate as it directs the state board to research alternatives to the LEAP test ahead of the contract ending in 2027. The bill also calls for examining nationally normed tests & reducing social studies testing in select grades & may prompt changes in curriculum and state spending under federal law. The Advocate
