  • A historic church celebrated its 160th anniversary on Founder's Day with community events centered on its rich heritage - including tours and talks that engaged parishioners and visitors. The event held Monday, May 18 honored its legacy.  WBRZ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Louisiana personal injury lawyer Morris Bart rolled out his signature hot sauce at Rouses Markets after a successful promotional giveaway; Baton Rouge stores sold out quickly. Bart will donate proceeds to charity (Second Harvest Food Bank) and plans to expand production if demand continues.  The Advocate

CULTURE NEWS

  • Wesley United Methodist Church is celebrating its 160-year legacy with a Founders' Day service on May 24 at 10 a.m. at 544 Government Street — guest speaker Rev. Dr. Robert from the Louisiana Conference will address the service.  WBRZ
  • CYT Baton Rouge is set to present 'The Little Mermaid' at LSU Shaver Theater in the Music and Dramatic Arts Building from Thursday to Sunday. Showings include 7 p.m. performances on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, a Saturday matinee at 2 p.m., and a Sunday final at 3 p.m.  WBRZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Basketball legend Shaquille O'Neal earned his second master's degree in liberal arts from LSU and delivered the commencement speech at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on Saturday + he joins previous academic achievements including an MBA from the University of Phoenix.  WJBO
  • LSU president Wade Rousse addressed the Baton Rouge Press Club about his first 180 days, noting stalled arena plans after a bid-rigging case & plans to restructure the university while filling key leadership roles to boost research and athletics amid NIL challenges.  The Advocate
  • Ascension Christian High School celebrated graduation on May 16 at Household of Faith Church with co-valedictorians Addison Rome and Madelyn Walter and salutatorian Evan Ard, who will attend Louisiana Tech, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and Southeastern Louisiana University, respectively, with plans in chemical engineering, biology/pre-med and computer science.  The Advocate

  • Owners of Nottoway Plantation have sued Iberville Parish Council, Parish President Chris Daigle, the city of Plaquemine and Safe Home Monitoring over alleged gross negligence + insufficient water pressure that led to last year's destructive fire at the historic building.  WJBO

HEALTH NEWS

  • Baton Rouge motorcyclists are urged to ride defensively this summer after nearly 100 riders died in 2023 and a recent crash sent one rider to the hospital; Harley-Davidson expert Beaux Brasseaux advises checking mirrors+slowing down to improve road awareness.  WBRZ

SPORTS NEWS

  • LSU Softball beat Virginia Tech, South Alabama, and Akron to win the Baton Rouge Regional and now prepares to face top-seeded Alabama in the Super Regionals (Southeastern Louisiana was eliminated in the Tuscaloosa Regional).  WJBO
  • LSU Baseball lost to Florida 15-11 in a season finale (29-27 overall and 9-21 in conference play) and will begin SEC Tournament play tomorrow night in Hoover against Oklahoma.  WJBO
