  • On May 10, more than 75 volunteers cleaned up a homeless encampment at Industriplex Park by removing hundreds of pounds of needles, mattresses & shopping carts from a site that has troubled locals for years. BREC supplied heavy machinery for the three-hour cleanup as officials plan to post new park rules and consider barriers to help keep the area safe.  The Advocate

CRIME NEWS

  • A judge declared accused serial killer Ryan Joseph Sharpe mentally fit for trial after two doctors evaluated him Tuesday - his trial for Carroll Breeden Sr.'s murder is set to resume November 17 in East Baton Rouge Parish.  The Advocate
  • Police apprehended escaped inmate Corey Boyd, 19, on Tuesday May 20 on the 1400 block of Iberville Street at around 7:30 p.m. after FBI agents tracked him down & he will be booked into a secure state facility on simple escape charges while five other inmates remain at large.  The Advocate
  • Deputies said 22-year-old mother Kayelyn Ford, who had a restraining order against her ex Brandon Bell following an April attack, was fatally shot Monday when Bell ambushed her as she left her apartment after calling 911—raising questions about the effectiveness of legal protections.  WBRZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Historians say that a fire nearly a week ago at Nottoway Plantation has led to talks about its past and the legacy of slavery. The plantation was built in 1859 and once belonged to John Randolph, who used many enslaved people to run his sugar cane fields—prompting new conversations about history.  WBRZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • East Baton Rouge Parish School System superintendent LaMont Cole said in a letter sent Monday that students should finish their current schools until they complete the highest grade offered—he noted the district will first prioritize local families for magnet programs before also allowing enrollment from areas like Zachary, Central, and Baker.  WBRZ
  • Advocates called on Tuesday, May 20 to boost state funding for early childhood education to help children keep their childcare seats and allow parents to work. The Ready Louisiana Coalition asked the legislature to invest at least $87.8 million in the Child Care Assistance Program in the upcoming budget.  WBRZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Baton Rouge Rehab Hospital has opened a specialized brain injury unit—located on United Plaza Boulevard—to provide focused care for brain injury patients. Hospital officials say the new unit is designed to improve treatment and recovery outcomes.  WAFB 9
