  • Johnny Naylor will share vegetable garden tips and discuss rain impacts on the WJBO Lawn and Garden Show airing Saturday mornings between 8 and 9 a.m. Residents can call (225) 499-9526 to join in and get hands-on gardening advice this week.  WJBO
  • At the Blue Star Mothers’ Memorial Day Flag Planting event, 11,000 flags were planted at the state capitol gardens Saturday to honor fallen Louisiana service members from 9/11 to now — Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser spoke to mark their sacrifice.  WBRZ

  • A local 12-year-old performer is living her dream on stage + screen after appearing in a national Oscars commercial, and she is preparing to take on her biggest acting challenge yet in Baton Rouge.  WAFB 9
  • Tyren Young, 13, finds healing in music after losing his brother when he was 9 in Baton Rouge and shares his journey as a testament to resilience while honoring his sibling's memory.  WAFB 9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • East Baton Rouge Parish school systems have announced plans to offer summer meal programs so every student will have food during the break. The effort will support families as schools close for summer.  WAFB 9
  • Saturday, the East Baton Rouge Parish School System honored 171 early childhood educators at the Baton Rouge Marriott (including pre-K and partner center teachers) with excellent ratings and stipends for Science of Reading training, and secured $1.1 million to expand learning seats with a state match next year.  WBRZ
  • Lawmakers have until June 1 to finalize a proposed $47 billion state budget that currently excludes teacher and support staff stipends, leaving local educators unsure about pay for next school year (teachers received $2,000 and staff $1,000 for three years).  WBRZ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Louisiana baseball won two games against Texas State on May 23 to earn a spot in the Sun Belt Championship. The team will face the Southern Miss-Troy game winner at 1:00 p.m. today.  WBRZ
  • At the SWAC tournament, Southern's baseball team lost its rematch with Florida A&M when an early home run by Ryan Hunter gave them hope before FAMU scored five unanswered runs in a 5-1 loss that ended their chance for NCAA play.  WBRZ
  • Former U-High quarterback Emile Picarella left the LSU football program on May 23 after redshirting his freshman season and not playing in games; he was ranked among the state’s top 50 players and had offers from SEC schools (Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and Kentucky).  WBRZ
