COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Troy Carter, the Chicken Shack manager known for recording daily inspirational messages on the restaurant’s answering machine (a local staple), died May 25 at 1:30 p.m. Local sources confirm his passing, marking the loss of a respected community figure.  WAFB 9
  • Baton Rouge local youth's lemonade stand (once a simple effort) raised thousands for children of fallen service members on Memorial Day, growing into a cherished community tradition.  WAFB 9
  • On Memorial Day, Honor Flight Louisiana took 76 veterans to Washington, DC to visit the World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam Veterans Memorials (covered by local reporters) to honor their service and remind them they are cherished.  WBRZ

  • Denham Springs High School graduated its Class of 2026 on May 17 at Southeastern Louisiana University; top graduate Lana Grace Overton (4.41 GPA) was honored and will study biology at LSU to become a veterinarian.  The Advocate
  • LSU researchers are testing how to use moon dust for building space structures. PhD student Emma McCarthy is using a thermite reaction (with lunar regolith) to isolate metals and cut resupply costs for NASA's Artemis mission.  The Advocate
  • The Louisiana Department of Education ended the school year by naming three Students of the Year at LSU's Lod Cook Conference Center on Monday, May 18. The winners represent elementary, middle, and high schools, and their achievements include community service, national competitions, and leadership roles.  WBRZ

  • Domestic violence advocates asked lawmakers to add three million dollars for survivor services last Friday after federal cuts reduced available funds. They say extra support is needed to help shelters provide beds, hygiene supplies and legal help.  WBRZ
  • On Memorial Day, Mayor Sid Edwards called for more support for homeless veterans — urging his team to identify veterans among 5% of the homeless. He discussed his plan during an interview with WBRZ at the Main Library along Goodwood Boulevard.  WBRZ

  • Baton Rouge doctor Olivia Ragusa debunked online tanning myths, warning Gen Z that a base tan does not protect skin from damage and acne while urging daily sunscreen use. A study by the American Academy of Dermatology links misinformation to rising skin cancer risks.  WBRZ
