COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Diocese of Baton Rouge will offer free summer meals for children under 18 at 10 drive–through church sites in June, with meals served from 9–11 a.m. on a first-come, first-served basis and registration required.  WBRZ
  • Environmental and community advocates released a report saying new ammonia plants by CF Industries, Clean Hydrogen Works, and Air Products near Donaldsonville will quadruple production and bring risks, such as burns and breathing problems, to local residents & schools. The first report in a six-part series urges leaders to choose nonindustrial economic development to protect the area’s rural character and cultural landmarks.  The Advocate

  • Southern Chicks Cafe and Daiquiris opened its first Baton Rouge franchise at 7112 Florida Blvd in the former Opie’s Restaurant earlier this month; franchise owner Brandon Bakare says the eatery offers drive-thru daiquiris, hearty fried chicken and a varied menu—he expects the brand to expand soon.  225 Magazine

CRIME NEWS

  • A West Baton Rouge teen was convicted of manslaughter for fatally shooting a 16 year old at the Port Allen and Brusly game in September when his modified Glock pistol accidentally discharged after he said two figures charged toward him—he claimed he only used his gun to scare them off.  The Advocate
  • Baton Rouge Police arrested Vennie Elphage for allegedly luring online victims and robbing them at gunpoint in the LSU area during April and May—officers found him with a weapon and stolen items when executing the warrant.  WBRZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A bill to let the new city of St. George run its own school system advanced in the legislature when Senate Bill 25 passed from the Appropriations Committee with a 15—2 vote, setting an April election for a companion constitutional amendment. Opponents argue the measure may divert funds from Baton Rouge schools while Senate Bill 234 awaits review in the Committee on Education.  WVLA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The final phase to build an I-10 interchange at Pecue Lane in Baton Rouge is on track to finish mid-2026—and the project, which began in 2017, will widen Pecue Lane from Perkins Road to Airline Highway and improve access to Woman's Hospital.  The Advocate

HEALTH NEWS

  • House passed a bill that would require most childless Medicaid recipients to work, study, or volunteer 80 hours a month starting end of 2026 — a change that could cut coverage for up to 158,000 residents in a program used by one in three people. Senate committees will review the legislation as experts warn that added paperwork may cause more eligible people to lose coverage.  The Advocate
  • Southeast Community Health Systems launched its Youth Mobile Crisis Response Program to support the mental health needs of children and adolescents up to age 21 in parishes such as Ascension, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Livingston, Tangipahoa and West Feliciana. The program is available 24/7 with on-site or virtual crisis intervention (ensuring prompt stabilization) and follow-up referrals (connecting families with ongoing support).  The Advocate
