- ➤ This summer, the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank is seeking volunteers to help sort and repackage food—available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. The food bank partners with local groups to feed the hungry across Baton Rouge and nearby communities. - ➤ The Baton Rouge Fire Department responded to a house fire on Edgewood Drive early Wednesday morning, May 28. WAFB 9
- ➤ Crews responded to a fire at a vacant house on North 22nd Street early Wednesday morning (3:30 a.m. call from Edgewood Drive) and prevented flames from spreading to nearby buildings while investigators ruled the structure a total loss with no injuries reported. WBRZ
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Baton Rouge Police arrested Sakyron Taylor, 24, on Wednesday after he shot one person at a McDonald's on South Sherwood Forest Boulevard during a verbal argument on Saturday (he was out on bond for an August 2024 homicide) and booked him on attempted second-degree murder and aggravated criminal damage to property charges. - ➤ Baton Rouge Police arrested Dakell Odds and Sommer Reed after search warrants at two addresses found a 3D printer—tools for making machine gun conversion devices—and drugs; Odds faces 16 counts including possession of a machine gun while Reed faces 16 counts for similar charges. WBRZ
- ➤ Zhanea Lee faces charges for allegedly setting her ex-boyfriend’s boat on fire on May 16 on Greenwell Springs Road—police say her actions endangered nearby residents and caused about $6,000 in damage. WAFB 9
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ More than 300 Baton Rouge high schoolers and recent graduates were paired with over 70 local companies this Wednesday to begin a paid summer job program; they will work 30 to 40 hours weekly for eight weeks to earn $3,500 while gaining skills and industry certifications through the mayor’s Youth Workforce Experience—announced at Baton Rouge Community College’s Match Day. - ➤ AmeriCorps grant cuts in late April removed $2.6 million in funds from 13 programs that used 330 AmeriCorps members to help feed central Louisiana residents facing food insecurity—leaving food banks and disaster response teams with fewer resources. Local officials say they worry that the loss of these volunteers will lead to longer lines and reduced help in times of need. The Advocate

Jeff Landry signed six car insurance reform bills into law at the Governor’s Mansion on May 28th to help lower rising car insurance costs by giving the insurance commissioner more power, requiring proof of accident injuries, limiting certain lawsuits, and offering a premium discount for commercial vehicles with dash cams installed & addressing concerns over frequent litigation abuses.
