  • Starting in June, Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank will open 13 meal sites in rural areas to provide one free meal box per week to children 18 and under—each box containing seven shelf-stable meals—to fight child hunger. The program, funded by USDA and run with local partners such as libraries and churches, will run through early August.  WVLA

  • A defendant in Caleb Wilson’s hazing death case was allowed on bond to leave Louisiana to live with his parents in North Texas—he must wear a tracking device on his phone, refrain from contacting co-defendants, and avoid possessing a firearm as the investigation continues.  The Advocate

  • Tomorrow, Baton Rouge residents can enjoy New Orleans soul music by Mia Borders at Manship Theatre at 7:30 p.m. with ticket prices from $20 to $46 while the Civic Orchestra performs movie soundtrack music at Main Library at 3 p.m.; on Sunday, June 1, attendees can visit free museums during First Free Sunday and explore mental health art at The Guru at Circa 1857 from 1 to 4 p.m.  225 Magazine

  • The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries urges locals to report fish kills in state waterways by calling 800-442-2511—details like the time, location, number, and species of fish should be shared to help biologists investigate.  WVLA

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new youth mobile crisis response program will launch June 2 — sending a therapist and a peer support specialist to kids up to age 21 in crisis wherever they are in need. The program was developed after lessons learned from tragic events at St. Helena College and Career Academy in 2023 and aims to remove barriers like lack of transportation and internet access.  WAFB 9
