EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Louisiana legislators approved bills that will give teachers a permanent pay raise of $2,250 and support staff a boost of $1,125 starting in the 2026-27 school year if the governor signs them and voters pass a constitutional amendment eliminating education trust funds to redirect savings—designed to help our educators earn wages closer to peers in other southern states. Lawmakers expect the amendment to appear on the ballot by April and aim to replace years of one-time stipends with lasting increases. The Advocate

- ➤ The East Baton Rouge Metro Council approved a $625k settlement for protestors who filed a wrongful arrest lawsuit after police shot Baton Rouge father Alton Sterling on July 5—seven council members voted for the settlement while four opposed it. WVLA
- ➤ The Louisiana Legislature approved a $51 billion budget that funds state programs with roughly half coming from federal funds. It allocated $43.5 million to the LA GATOR program—pulled $1.2 billion for road, bridge and college campus improvements and raised local jails' daily inmate housing payments to $29.39. The Advocate
- ➤ Louisiana lawmakers passed the PBM Reform Act (HB 264), a law that targets pharmacy benefit managers, and the bill now goes to the governor's desk. The law bans spread pricing, makes sure that drug discounts go to patients or health plans, and sets up a council to track industry practices and guide future reforms. WAFB 9
