Good morning, Baton Rouge. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 7th of July.

CRIME NEWS

  • Baton Rouge police are investigating a shooting early Saturday morning in Fairfields when officers responded just before 4 a.m. to a call about a 38-year-old man on Washington Avenue who, reportedly under the influence and armed with scissors, threatened them—after a taser failed to subdue him, an officer shot him and he was pronounced dead with both officers now on administrative leave.  WBRZ
  • Police Captain Devin Boutte was fatally stabbed on Legion Street in Iberville Parish — the suspect is in custody according to the sheriff’s office.  WVLA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nearly one in four third graders fell below the required reading score at spring testing but most will not be held back because exemptions and tutoring helped many pass a retest—districts such as St. Tammany and St. Charles reported drops in at-risk rates from 16% to 4% and 14% to 1%, and state education officials expect improved support will boost reading scores.  The Advocate
  • On June 26, Baker public schools ended 22 years of direct operations when Helix Community Schools took over, with most employees switching to the new charter group and about 100 staff being laid off. The charter group now runs Baker High and Park Ridge Academic Magnet School under a contract through summer 2030—changes that come as the district cuts its $15.6 million budget and boosts funding by raising the property tax millage.  The Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A 12-person team of Louisiana first responders specializing in swift-water rescue and urban search and rescue was deployed Saturday to assist with Texas flood emergency efforts that have claimed at least 67 lives and left dozens missing. The team includes personnel from Baton Rouge, Zachary, West Feliciana, East Side and Shreveport fire departments and has trained year-round for missions like this.  The Advocate
