CRIME NEWS

  • Baton Rouge police investigated a shooting on Sunday, July 13 in the 6000 block of South Sherwood Forest Boulevard that left Byron Howard, 44, dead and another person critically injured while inside a car — the investigation is ongoing.  WVLA
  • Ascension Parish deputies arrested 17-year-old Jadon Sterling, charged with second-degree murder in the July 4 shooting that killed 18-year-old Justin Scott, plus 20-year-old Jeremiah Brown, charged as the principal to second-degree murder after he turned himself in as the alleged getaway driver following a fight and gunfire at a home on Dave Miller Road.  WBRZ
  • Police responded to a shooting on the 10000 block of Rieger Road at 5 a.m. Monday, July 14, transporting one person in stable condition to the hospital—officials are still investigating the incident.  WVLA
  • At least one person was hurt in a shooting along Plank Road yesterday afternoon when Baton Rouge Police roped off Uncle Moe’s Food Mart and Deli (around 3:15 p.m.) after the incident (reported around 2:55 p.m.) and the injured person was taken to a local hospital with a gunshot wound.  WBRZ
  • A man was arrested for second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of 48-year-old Derrick Lee on December 21 in the 1100 block of N. 36th Street, police said Monday—23-year-old Otis Douglas has been booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.  The Advocate

  • The Baton Rouge Underground Film Festival is a new four-day event that will run from Aug. 21–24 at the Manship Theatre on Lafayette St and will showcase Louisiana’s independent films while offering screenings, panels, and a $5,000 Shoe String Award for a filmmaker. Tickets are on sale online at the theatre website.  WVLA

  • Officials from the Red Cross, Red Stick Ready, and the mayor’s Office hosted a disaster readiness seminar Monday night at 6 p.m. at the Jewel J. Newman Community Center—families learned how to build emergency kits and secure their homes as hurricane season approached.  WBRZ
  • District 2 Councilman Kenny Anthony Jr. hosted a disaster readiness seminar Saturday, July 14 at the Jewel J. Newman Community Center to advise Baton Rouge residents on preparing for hurricane season by making storm plans, securing their homes, and building emergency kits. Representatives from the American Red Cross and Red Stick Ready provided resources and guidance to ensure the community is ready for possible storms.  WVLA
