CRIME NEWS

  • Army veteran Bruce Sandifer lost part of his left leg after an allegedly impaired driver struck him head-on while he rode his motorcycle eastbound on Highway 40 in Tangipahoa Parish last Saturday at 10:00 p.m.—the driver, Austin Brunet, was arrested on hit-and-run and DWI charges.  WAFB 9
  • Matthew Mire was sentenced yesterday to two life sentences plus 348 years for murdering a state trooper and a Prairieville woman during a three-parish spree in 2021—he is headed to Angola.  WAFB 9
  • Southern University expelled the Beta Sigma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity after an investigation into a hazing ritual that led to junior engineering student Caleb Wilson's death in February—three suspects were arrested after the incident.  WJBO

  • At the new Red Stick Reads grand opening on Government Street during Hot Art Cool Nights, Sarah Brown was surprised when Jake Roblez proposed to her. The couple, who met on a dating app and chose to remain in Baton Rouge, celebrated the unexpected moment with friends.  225 Magazine

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Baton Rouge’s PAL branch in partnership with BRidge Agency sent students to a national youth summit in Washington, D.C. on the weekend of July 12 — the three-day event focused on a growth mindset, safety classes, and life skills workshops while connecting local youth with peers from several states.  The Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Baton Rouge board appointed by Build Baton Rouge has invited proposals from developers to transform Plank Road and Scenic Highway with projects such as affordable housing, mixed-use spaces and community facilities—officials said proposals must align with corridor plans and transit access. Proposals will be accepted on a rolling basis as part of efforts that build on investments like a $53 million Bus Rapid Transit system and local greenway restoration.  WVLA
  • East Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sid Edwards thanked Sen. Regina Barrow after she secured $1,025,000 in state funds — a sum to support violence prevention, neighborhood outreach and health programs — on July 21.  WVLA

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Monday, the National Weather Service issued a heat advisory from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. for south Louisiana, including Baton Rouge where temperatures reached 92, and forecasts call for the heat index to rise to as high as 114 on Tuesday and Wednesday with a chance of showers. Health officials warned residents—especially children, seniors, and outdoor workers—to take precautions by staying hydrated and taking frequent breaks in the shade.  The Advocate
